INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Victories came both on and off the field for the UIndy softball team Saturday. Before setting a new program record for consecutive wins with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Bellarmine, the Greyhounds presented the Muscular Dystrophy Association with a check for $4,514.
Saturday's presentation was the culmination of the Greyhounds' year-long Muscular Dystrophy Association fund raiser. The sizable check was presented to Liam Ealy and his family on behalf of the MDA. Liam, who was diagnosed with MD at a very young age, is the nephew of Greyhound softball alum Megan Slightom.
The bulk of the money came from a group of more than 60 “game-day” sponsors who pledged a monetary donation based on the number of singles, doubles, triples, home runs, walks and strikeouts per game the Greyhounds accumulated this season.
The Bellarmine Knights (24-20, 16-11), whom the Hounds defeated by scores of 8-3 and 2-0, also got in on the act, as they, like UIndy, have sold muscular dystrophy t-shirts to raise additional funds. Both teams also wore special jerseys Saturday showing a united front for muscular dystrophy awareness.
The pre-game festivities concluded with young Liam throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

GAME ONE
The top-ranked Greyhounds (42-2, 22- GLVC) jumped on the Knights for a pair of runs in the first, with RBI doubles coming from sophomore
Taylor Russell and junior
Alexa Alfaro.
In her next at bat, Russell deposited a 2-2 pitch onto National Avenue for a solo homer in the third. She also garnered a run-scoring single in the fourth with an RBI groundout in the sixth to finish game one with four runs driven in.
Samantha Krcelich,
Erika Goodwin and
Casey Williamson each recorded a triple in the opener.
Senior
Jennifer DeMotte (20-0) picked up the pitching win, striking out eight in the complete-game effort. The Franklin Central grad has yet to be tagged with a loss in the circle this season.
GAME TWO
Saturday's second game turned into quite the pitching duel. After the Greyhounds touched up Bellarmine starter Ally Foster for five hits and two runs in the first three innings, Foster settled down to retire nine of the final 10 batters she faced.
UIndy's two runs came in the third inning, with the first coming on Russell's second dinger of the day. The Hounds tacked on one more with a Williamson double, a DeMotte sacrifice and an Alfaro groundout.
Meanwhile, freshman hurler
Morgan Foley (22-2) tossed a two-hitter in a dominant performance. The Louisville, Ky., native kept the Bellarmine batters off balance with her impressive fastball, as she finished with 14 Ks in seven innings.
Winners of 35 straight, the Greyhounds remain in town to host GLVC-newcomer McKendree in a Sunday twin bill. The team will honor its four seniors prior to the games. First pitch from Baumgartner field is scheduled for 12 p.m.
