Box Score | Coach Gouard Interview
INDIANAPOLIS – A track meet broke out in Nicoson Hall Monday night as the No. 14 UIndy men's basketball team (13-2, 5-2 GLVC) downed in-state rival Saint Joseph's,
118-85. Despite both teams playing their third game in five days, the night featured the second-highest combined score of any GLVC contest this season.
Â
Senior
Jared Grady came off the bench to score a team-high 19 points. He was one of seven Greyhounds to reach double figures, including junior
Brennan McElroy, who finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Â
After facing a pair of top-10 opponents late last week, the Hounds hosted a Saint Joseph's team with just one conference win to date. However, the SJC roster included the GLVC's leading scorer, Cameron Vines, who came into the night averaging 24.4 points per game.
Â
The Pumas (4-13, 1-6) used a fast start to build an 8-2 lead and force an early UIndy timeout.  They later led 15-10, but a 16-3 run from the Hounds quickly changed the tone of the half.
Â
The rally was fueled by Grady, who racked up six points, two steals and one assist in the spurt. His steal and subsequent breakaway dunk midway through the period left an accent mark on the first half.
Â
The Greyhounds' lead touched 14 before the score settled at 54-42 at the break.
Â
The up-tempo action continued in the second half as the teams scored a combined 18 points in the first three minutes alone. The Hounds created a number of fast-break looks early in the final stanza, including back-to-back transition buckets from
Joe Lawson and
Leland Brown to up the margin to 18 points at the 16-minute mark.
Â
Two minutes later, UIndy earned its first 20-ppoint advantage on a short jumper from
Joe Daniels. A pair of free throws from Vines would later cut it to 16, but on the ensuing UIndy possession, Grady threw down his second jam of the game, sparking a 14-6 run midway through the half that all but put the game out of reach.
Â
UIndy delivered a 3-point barrage down the stretch to extend the lead. Junior
Kendall Vieke drained three triples in one 80-second span, while
Jordan Loyd knocked down a pair of treys and
Cole Adair one.
Â
When all was said and done, UIndy connected of 42 of 70 field goal attempts, good for an even 60 percent. Lawson contributed 18 points and two blocks, Loyd added 15 points and two assists, while
Tyrae Robinson went for 13 points.
Â
For the Pumas, Vines put up 20 points in the first half, but UIndy's halftime adjustments helped limit the dynamic scorer to a relatively-low seven points in the final 20 minutes.
Â
The Greyhounds hit the road later this week to take on fellow GLVC East foes Illinois Springfield and McKendree Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
