KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The UIndy football team upped its winning streak to five with a
23-20 come-from-behind win at Truman Saturday afternoon. Down 20-6 in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds (6-1, 4-0 GLVC) scored the game's final 17 points to seal the victory.
The Hounds out-gained their hosts 509 total yards to 193, but the Bulldogs (4-3, 3-2) capitalized on five UIndy turnovers, four of which came in the first half.
Â
After connecting on a field goal on its opening drive, UIndy managed just three more points the remainder of the half. Truman, meanwhile, scored 17 first-half points, all off Greyhound turnovers. Two touchdowns came within a minute of game time, as an 87-yard fumble return and an interception and ensuing 15-yard scoring rush put the Hounds in a 17-3 hole early in the second.  Â
Â
But despite a rough first half and a scoreless third quarter, the Greyhounds generated two touchdowns and a field goal in the fourth while holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the final 22 minutes of play.
Â
UIndy sandwiched a three-and-out by Truman with a pair of TDs – a five-yard scramble by QB
Connor Barthel and a 70-yard gallop by senior
Matt Ripp. The latter not only tied the score but was also good for the longest play from scrimmage by a Greyhound this season.
Â
With the score knotted at 20-20 and 10 minutes still left in the game, the Greyhound defense forced another three-and-out before
Scott Miller's third field goal of the game put the Hounds up for good. The Bulldogs would later fail to convert on two fourth-down conversions in the waning minutes.
Â
The Hounds' running game generated 334 yards, with Ripp going for 186 and
Andrew Walker adding 152, both good for personal bests.
Â
Miller's 42 yarder in the second quarter marked a season long. Sophomore linebacker
Rob Dury led the Hounds with 10 tackles, while
John Strickland had three pass break-ups and
Lee Campbell added a sack.
Â
After playing five of their first seven games on the road, the Greyhounds end the season with three of the final four regular season games at Key Stadium. The stretch starts with a Homecoming match-up against GLVC-newcomer Lincoln Saturday, Oct. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
Notes: Barthel's first completion today put him over 3,000 passing yards for his career … The last time UIndy had five turnovers in a game came Oct. 20, 2007 versus Wayne State … Redshirt-freshman cornerback Mike Hamilton garnered his first career start, compiling two tackles and a pair of pass break-ups … TSU running back Garrett White came into the game ranked second in the GVLC with 121.7 rushing yards per game but was limited to just 41 yards on 12 carries.Â
