INDIANAPOLIS- UIndy men's soccer took is fifth-straight Great Lakes Valley Conference win in convincing fashion Sunday at Key Stadium, defeating visiting Southern Indiana 5-0.
UIndy (5-3-2; 5-2-1 GLVC) scored early and often, notching its first goal in the 12th minute.
Jacob Meyer got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard with his fourth goal of the year, taking a short cross from
Daniel Wellmann. UIndy doubled its lead about 11 minutes later, on an own goal by USI.
Heading into the half,
Patrick O'Brien pushed the Greyhound lead to 3-0 on a penalty kick. The junior transfer would notch a second goal just about five minutes into the second half, taking a ball across the top of the box from Meyer and finishing it into the top corner of the frame.
UIndy would take another penalty kick in the 58th minute, with
Max Rohda tallying his first goal of the year to put the Greyhounds up to the final 5-0. Â
The Greyhounds took 20 shots on the day, to USI's nine, with both teams taking four corner kicks apiece. O'Brien's four shots led the Greyhound offense, while
Casey Castle added three.
Andrew Verhonik earned the win in goal, making four saves in just more than 63 minutes of work before giving way to Chris Jones, who made one save in about 27 minutes in the net.
The Greyhounds continue GLVC play on the road next Friday and Sunday, heading to Quincy and Truman State. Friday's match versus Quincy is slated for 8:30 p.m. EST.
