Sharp-shooting Warriors spoil Greyhounds’ season opener

DETROIT – The 17th-ranked Wayne State Warriors shot 52.7 percent from the field Friday night, defeating UIndy 77-59 in the Greyhounds' regular season opener.

Led by Des Lavita-Stephens (6-for-8), Shannon Wilson (6-for-12) and Shareta Brown (6-for-12), WSU managed to pour it in at a high rate, controlling the game from the opening tip.

Senior Carly Lythjohan scored a career-high 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers – also an individual career mark. She also added six rebounds and an assist to her stat line.

Junior Princess German led the Hounds with 16 points, going 7-9 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Nicole Anderson and senior Kelly Walter each finished with 8 points.

Junior-transfer Mariah Weddle scored 6 points, going a clean 4-4 from the free throw line in her first game wearing a Greyhound uniform. Weddle also had a pair of assists and rebounds.

The hosts took a 46-27 lead into the halftime break, shooting over 57 percent (19 of 33) from the floor and sinking 7 of 11 three-pointers. The Hounds managed just eight field goals in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 33 percent (8 of 24).

UIndy won the second half, 32-31, but the Warriors' lead was insurmountable at that point in the contest.

The Greyhounds shot 34.6 percent for the game, including 30 (6 of 20) from long range, but did sink 17 of 21 free throws. Wayne State out-rebounded UIndy 38-28, and finished with 15 second chance points. The Warriors also held a distinct advantage with 34 points in the paint to the Hounds' 20.

Lavita-Stephens and Wilson each recorded 17 points for the Warriors, and the All-American center Brown scored 12 and pulled in 16 rebounds.

The Greyhounds get a week to bounce back for their next game, a 1:00 p.m. meeting next Saturday at Grand Valley State.
