ALLENDALE, Mich. – Despite a career-high 21 points from junior
Princess German, the UIndy women's basketball squad fell 73-57 at Grand Valley State Saturday.
UIndy (0-2) turned the ball over 17 times and gave up 17 offensive boards to the Lakers (2-0), who converted for 29 total points off of turnovers and second chance opportunities.
Grand Valley State shot 40 percent from the field, but attempted 70 field goals to the Greyhounds' 41, and pulled in 40 percent of its missed field goals.
The Greyhounds started slowly on the offensive end, trailing 8-4 at the first media break with only two field goal attempts and four turnovers. It was a struggle to find production in the paint, and as a result UIndy's first three made field goals were three-pointers.
The Hounds trailed 16-12 at the midway point, but a three-point barrage from GVSU's Kat LaPrairie quickly upped the Lakers' lead. Within a three minute stretch LaPrairie hit five consecutive threes, making it 31-15 in favor of the hosts.
LaPrairie's five consecutive triples proved to be enough for the Lakers to head to the locker rooms with a 43-31 lead. UIndy still held Grand Valley State to 37 percent shooting, and minus LaPrairie's quick burst the Lakers went just 11 of 38 from the field (2 of 19 from three-point), only shooting 29 percent overall in the first 20 minutes. The Lakers did manage to pull in 12 of their 27 misses, leading to 14 second chance points.
On the other side, the Greyhounds poured in 60 percent of their shots (9-for-15), but 11 costly turnovers led to 11 GVSU points.
Princess German led the way for the Hounds with 11 points at the break, including a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range.
Coming out of the break, the Lakers scored 15 of the first 21 points to build their biggest lead, 58-37. From there, the Greyhounds were able to cut into the hosts lead bit-by-bit, getting as close as 69-55 with three minutes left in the game. But another three from LaPrairie following a UIndy timeout all but sealed the Lakers' victory.
German finished the game with a career-best 21 points, shooting 7-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
Kelly Walter scored 12 points and finished with five boards, and
Carly Lythjohan led the team with eight rebounds.
The Greyhounds shot 46 percent from the floor (19-for-41) as a team.
UIndy looks to rebound versus GLIAC-member Northwood in the home opener Tuesday night. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. in Nicoson Hall.
