INDIANAPOLIS – In the friendly confines of Nicoson Hall for the first time this season, the UIndy women's basketball team fell 69-61 to visiting Northwood Tuesday night.
Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, the Greyhounds (0-3) got within one point on two separate occasions in the closing minutes. The Timberwolves (2-1) answered each time, hitting a handful of clutch shots and 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch.
The somewhat-sloppy first half resulted in low shooting percentages, 18 personal fouls and 16 total turnovers between the squads. UIndy (8-of-25) and Northwood (12-of-32) each shot below 40 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes.
The Greyhounds hit just two of their first 13 shots and fell behind 16-8 midway through the first half.
UIndy was forced to settle for several three-point jumpers late in the shotclock, but after hitting one on the opening possession missed seven a row before
Kelly Walter sank one with 3:36 left. Her triple helped spark a 10-7 Greyhounds advantage down the final minutes of the opening half, trimming the Timberwolves' lead to 32-24 at the break.
Each team had a short run out of the half. The 'Wolves went on a 7-0 spurt to make it 39-24 – their largest lead of the game – before the Hounds responded with 10 in a row to get within five points.
The Greyhounds continued to chip away at the Northwood lead before a three-pointer from freshman
Sarah Costello and back-to-back layups from
Princess German made it 51-50 with just under five remaining.
The Timberwolves' Lauren Robak responded with a jumper on the other end.
Minutes later Walter sank two free throws to make it 54-53, but again it was Robak delivering for NU. Her three-pointer upped the Northwood lead and all but sealed the win.
Nicole Anderson was a big part of the Greyhounds comeback. After scoring just two points on 1-of-3 shooting in the first half, the sophomore transfer poured in 13 points on 5-of-6 in the second.
Costello scored seven of her 11 in the second frame, and for the game hit every shot she attempted. She finished 3-for-3 from the floor, 1-for-1 from three and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
For the third game in a row German led all UIndy scorers with 17 points, and
Carly Lythjohan added six points and 10 rebounds.
Kelly Walter added nine points and four rebounds in 40 minutes of action.
UIndy finished with 34 points in the paint to the Timberwolves' 24, and had a 10-2 fastbreak scoring edge. After a 60 percent shooting second half the Greyhounds finished the game at 44 percent (21 of 47) compared to 41 percent (24 of 58) for NU.
Turnovers again proved to be an Achilles for the Hounds, who committed 19 to just five total team assists. Northwood finished the game with 18 points off of turnovers.
The Hounds return to action this Saturday against Ohio Dominican (2-2) in Nicoson Hall. Tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. following the men's Thanksgiving Classic.
