Anderson, Walter lift Greyhounds past Panthers, 77-72

INDIANAPOLIS – Nicole Anderson recorded a double-double (23 points, 11 rebounds), and Kelly Walter added 20 points in a gutsy 77-72 overtime win over visiting Ohio Dominican Saturday night in Nicoson Hall.

But the Greyhounds' first win of the season didn't come without its challenges. After a back-and-forth second half, the real drama started when Walter drained three-pointer with just 11 seconds left on the clock to give UIndy a 66-63 lead.

On the other end, Ohio Dominican's leading scorer, Kacee Hockenberry, missed a three-pointer as time continued to expire. The Panthers' Micaela Liddane grabbed the long rebound and half-shot, half-threw the ball up as a buzzer went off, sinking a remarkable shot to tie the game.

After a short discussion, the officials confirmed she released the ball in time, and the Greyhounds were all of a sudden regrouping for five more minutes of action.

"That's kind of the way things have been going for us so far," Head Coach Constantin Popa said after the game. His young team started the season 0-3 against three regional opponents. "It seems like it always happens to us somehow."

The Greyhounds – staring at the program's first ever 0-4 start – dominated the extra session, leaning on Anderson's production in the post. The sophomore-transfer scored six of her season-high 23 points in overtime, finishing the game 8-for-10 from the field.

After going just 2-for-7 from the free throw line through the second half and overtime, the Greyhounds buried their final three to seal the victory.

"I'm just happy we pulled through the next five minutes," Popa noted, following the Hounds' overtime performance. "When they make that type of shot to go to overtime it's not easy to handle, especially for our young players, but we fought through it."

He continued: "That's the one thing. Even though our record is not very good, the one thing I can say about these young ladies is they fight. We did not stop playing. We did not stop fighting."

UIndy (1-3) seemed to pick up where it left off in Tuesday night's game versus Northwood. Despite the loss, the Hounds shot nearly 60 percent in the second half, and gashed the Timberwolves for 34 points in the paint.

Saturday, the Greyhounds went 14-for-27 (52 percent) in the opening half, including 5-for-13 from three-point range. They also buried 11 of their 12 free throws, and went on to take a 44-36 lead into the break – their first halftime lead of the season.

The Panthers responded out of the halftime break by taking 50-49 lead on a 14-5 scoring run. But once the Hounds settled in offensively, the squads traded buckets and the lead. The half featured eight ties and six lead changes throughout.

The final few minutes were hectic on both ends of the court, as the teams combined for five turnovers and a handful of missed free throws. The score was knotted at 63 apiece for almost two full minutes until Walter drained the go-ahead triple with 11 tics left.

After the productive first half, UIndy was outscored 30-22 in the second, scoring exactly half of its first-half total and shooting only 36 percent. The Greyhounds won the overtime session 11-6, however, going 4-for-5 from the floor to ODU's 2-for-7.

UIndy shot 47 percent for the entire contest, and held the Panthers to just 37 percent from the floor.

Anderson's 23 points and 11 rebounds were both season highs, and the Miami (OH) transfer went 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and chipped in three assists.

Walter scored a season-high 20 points, and hit four three-pointers. UIndy's eighth all-time career three-point shooter was just 3-for-15 on the season entering the game. She also went 6-for-6 from the free throw line, and had five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.

Freshman Sarah Costello finished with nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in her first collegiate start. Senior Carly Lythjohan added five points, five boards, four assists, a block and a steal.

Perhaps the most telling improvement the Hounds made as a team came in the assist column, where they racked up 20 dimes on 27 field goals (74 percent). They had just 22 total in the three prior games, assisting on just 38 percent of their field goals.

UIndy also finished with eight blocks, more than the other three games combined. Freshman Ashley Montanez led the way with three rejections.

"I always said from the get-go, 'This won't be a walk in the park'," Popa said, commenting on his squad that features nine new Greyhounds (six freshmen, three transfers) from last season. "It's going to take a little time for the team to get some kind of chemistry. It's on all of us, and I've been asking them to bring more enthusiasm. It doesn't matter if you play two minutes or twenty minutes, we need that energy and chemistry as a team."

The Hounds will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play earlier than usual this season, starting with a road contest at Saint Joseph's next Wednesday, Dec. 3. Tip is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
