Walter's career-high 31 leads UIndy in conference opening win

RENSSELAER, Ind. – Senior Kelly Walter torched Saint Joseph's in a midweek Great Lakes Valley Conference contest Wednesday night, scoring a career-high 31 points – including the Greyhounds' final 12 – in a 59-55 victory against the Pumas to open conference play

Walter provided more than half of the UIndy offense in a game that saw both squads struggle to score at times. The Windfall, Ind., native, however, shot 56 percent from the field, including 6-for-10 from three-point range and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.

As a team, the Hounds (2-3, 1-0 GLVC) shot nearly 48 percent (22-of-46), but turned the ball over 21 times and gave up 20 Saint Joseph's offense rebounds, limiting their opportunities.

Despite shooting 23 more field goals, the Pumas (2-5, 0-1 GLVC) were held to a mere 30 percent from the floor (21-69) and made fewer shots than the visiting Hounds. It marked the fourth game in a row the Greyhounds held their opponent to 36 percent shooting or worse.

The start was slow for the Greyhounds, who trailed 8-0 at the first media break over five minutes into the game. They turned the ball over five times and were outrebounded 9-3 through that opening stretch.

Walter put UIndy on the board at the 13:48 mark, draining a three-pointer to make it 8-3.

Despite the Hounds' slow start, the Pumas struggled on their end to capitalize, shooting just 25 percent (5-for-20) through the first two media timeouts.

The Hounds warmed up and took advantage, grabbing a 14-11 lead on Walter's second triple of the night. Walter and junior Princess German combined to score the first 17 points, and 22 of the team's 24 first-half points, keeping the Greyhounds on pace with the Pumas.

UIndy shot almost 40 percent in the opening frame (9-for-23) compared to SJC's 29 percent (10-for-35).

The Hounds' Nicole Anderson, who recorded a double-double against Ohio Dominican last Saturday, picked up three fouls in the first half in just five minutes of action. She was able to make an impact in the second half, however, scoring five quick points and sparking a 9-0 UIndy run that gave the Hounds a 33-30 lead.

Her court time was cut short when she picked her fourth foul at the 14:49 mark.

Walter would continue to carry the Greyhounds' offense, but both teams hit a second half skid that encompassed nearly five full minutes. There were no field goals scored from 10:20 left to 5:40.

The shot that snapped the drought was a three-pointer by SJC's Courtney Kvachkoff, tying the game at 49-49.

From that point forward, Walter scored 10 points in a row for UIndy, including two three-pointers and a pair of free throws to seal the win with seconds on the clock.

The Pumas' Kalea Parks, who entered the game as the GLVC's leading scorer at 23.8 points per game, was held to just 10 points in limitied minutes.

German finished with 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting (55 percent) and added three steals.

In 16 minutes, Anderson tallied six points and six rebounds. Carly Lythjohan recorded six rebounds, two blocks and two assists. Freshman Ashley Montanez led the Greyhounds and set a personal high with seven boards.

UIndy returns to action Saturday against regional foe Cedarville, with tip set for 2 p.m. ET.
