CEDARVILLE, Ohio - After a slow offensive start the Cedarville Yellow Jackets outpaced the UIndy women's basketball team in the final 20 minutes, defeating the Greyhounds 68-58 Saturday evening in a regional contest.
UIndy (2-4) played stout defense to start the game, limiting the Yellow Jackets to just five field goals in their first 20 attempts.
The Greyhounds built a 23-13 lead with nearly five minutes left in the half on the strength of that defense, but the Jackets (8-1) heated up to finish the half on an 11-5 run to make it 28-24 at the break.
On their side of the court, the Greyhounds hit 40 percent on 10-of-25 shooting, led in scoring by
Kelly Walter's and
Princess German's eight points apiece.
German came out of the break on fire, scoring 10 of the Greyhounds' first 12 points. UIndy held a 38-29 lead five minutes into the second, but the home squad began sinking shot after shot to overcome the Hounds. Over a 10-minute stretch, the Jackets went on a 25-10 run to take a 55-48 advantage.
Cedarville went from a 35 percent shooting mark in the opening half to 48 percent in the second, and knocked down 15 of their total 18 free throws in the second. Senior guard Raegan Ryan scored 20 points for the Jackets, including 18 in the second half, going a perfect 14-for-14 from the free throw line.
As a team, the Greyhounds shot just 37 percent (16-for-43), but did make 22 of their 26 free throw attempts.
German led the Greyhounds with 20 points – her second 20-point game of the season – on 5-for-14 shooting and 8-of-11 from the charity stripe. She also added five boards, an assist and a steal.
Sophomore-transfer
Nicole Anderson recorded her second double-double of the season, pouring in 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
After setting a career best with 31 points last Tuesday, senior
Kelly Walter dropped 16 with a 5-for-13 shooting clip to go along with three rebounds, two assists, a bock and a steal.
The other two starters, senior
Carly Lythjohan and freshman
Sarah Costello, combined to score eight points, and Lythjohan hauled in eight boards.
UIndy had zero points from its bench players compared to 18 from the Cedarville reserves. The Greyhounds did outrebound the Jackets, however, 34-26, outrebounding an opponent for the first time this season.
The Greyhounds have a quick turnaround, as they'll head to Terre Haute, Ind., for an exhibition game against Indiana State tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET.
