Sycamores pull away from Greyhounds in exhibition match

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The UIndy women's basketball team hung tough with Division I opponent Indiana State for much of Sunday's exhibition game, but the Sycamores eventually pulled away for a 62-43 victory at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

Ball control was an issue early on for the Greyhounds (2-4), who turned the ball over on five of their first seven possessions.

Despite the numerous lost possessions, the Hounds took an 11-10 lead at the 12-minute mark on a steal-and-score from Kelly Walter. The sharp-shooting senior guard scored the Hounds' first 11 points, going 4-for-5 from the floor during that scoring stretch.

The Sycamores (7-1) regained a lead at 14-11, but senior Carly Lythjohan got on the board with a corner three-pointer to knot the game at 14-14 with 6:44 left in the half.

UIndy had 23 turnovers in the opening half, totaling more than its season per-game average of 17.3. Those lost opportunities helped the Sycamores take a 25-15 lead into the halftime break, as 23 of those points came off of UIndy turnovers.

The Sycamores struggled on the offensive end, as well, shooting just 38-percent in the first half with 11 turnovers of their own due to an active Greyhound defense. Two late threes from Jasmine Grier helped them reach 25 by half, but it was still the second fewest ISU has scored in an opening 20 minutes this season.

The Greyhounds were able to outrebound their Division I hosts 17-10 in the first half, but had trouble feeding the post. Forwards Nicole Anderson, Carly Lythjohan, Ashley Montanez and Marlena Muszak combined to play 46 minutes, but finished with just one field goal attempt between them – Lythjohan's three-pointer.

Each team traded runs to start the final half. UIndy scored the first six points on threes from Anderson and Sarah Costello, but the Sycamores answered with 12 consecutive points to open up their largest lead of the game at 37-21.
The Greyhounds refused to go away, however, riding a nine-point spurt from Walter to pull within eight at 39-31.

From there, Indiana State went on a 17-4 run to distance themselves on the scoreboard and all but put the game away.

After a slow first half, the Sycamores shot over 46-percent in the second half to help seal the victory.

Walter led all scorers with 22 points, and hit 4-of-8 from three-point range. UIndy shot an even 40-percent from the field (12-for-30) but got only four 2-point baskets. Behind the arc, the Hounds went 8-for-16.

The Greyhounds have a full week off before escaping the frigid Indiana weather, heading south to Winter Park, Florida, for the Rollins Invitational. The Greyhounds will face Tarleton State Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. in the opening round, and will see either Rollins or Concord (W. Va.) in the second round the following afternoon depending on the outcome.

Notes: The game was considered a regular season contest for Indiana State, but an exhibition for the visiting Greyhounds.
