Greyhounds open Rollins Invitational with 57-51 win over Tarleton State

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Three double-digit scorers and a strong defensive outing led the UIndy women's basketball team to a 57-51 victory over Tarleton State Monday in the opening round of the Rollins Invitational.

Facing a TexAnns team that received votes in last week's USA Today Coaches Poll, the Greyhounds (3-4) won a contest that featured multiple ties and lead changes.

Kelly Walter (22 points), Princess German (17) and Nicole Anderson (12) each finished in double figures, combining to score as many points as the TexAnns totaled.

The first half went back-and-forth, and was marked by lengthy runs from each side
.
The Greyhounds shot just 3 of 10 out of the gate and trailed 9-7 at the first media break. But three quick TexAnn turnovers helped spark an 11-0 UIndy run to make it 18-9.

After building a 21-12 advantage, the Greyhounds hit an offensive skid that allowed the TexAnns (5-2) to tear off a 12-1 run of their own to retake the lead, 23-22 with 3:51 remaining in the half.

Tarleton's response forced a timeout from UIndy Coach Constantin Popa, and out of the break Walter drained her third three-pointer of the opening period to end a near five-minute field goal drought.

The Greyhounds then closed out the half strong, and when the dust settled they took a 32-28 edge into the locker rooms. Walter scored 17 to lead all scorers, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the free throw line. Princess German also reached double figures with 10 points on 4-for-8 shooting.

UIndy held Tarleton to 37-percent from the field in the first half and forced 11 turnovers that resulted in 10 points.

The story of the second half proved to be the stout Greyhound defense.

UIndy's defense clamped down after the TexAnns started the half with seven straight points, holding TSU to just 3-of-14 shooting over the next 12-plus minutes.

For the half, TSU shot under 39-percent, going just 2-for-9 from long range while turning the ball over eight times.

The Greyhounds shot just 38-percent in the second half, but did enough offensively to complement their tenacious defense.

Anderson scored nine of her 12 points in the second frame, and finished the game 4-for-7 both from the floor and from the free throw line.

Walter led all scorers with 22 points on 6 of 12 shooting, and matched Anderson's team-high eight boards. German dropped 17 for UIndy, adding two steals, two assists and a block.

Devin Ferguson finished with five assists, three rebounds, a block and a steal in 21 minutes. Carly Lythjohan added five boards to go along with a steal, block and an assist. Ashley Montanez totaled four rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

With the win the Greyhounds advance to the Rollins Invitational Championship to face the 14th-ranked hosts, who defeated Concord (W. Va.) 62-45 in Monday's opener. Tip is set for Tuesday at 6 p.m.
