ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Coming off a resounding 87-66 win over Malone Friday night the UIndy men's basketball squad kept the ball rolling with a 88-51 rout over Northern Michigan in their final contest of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge, hosted by Lewis University.
The Greyhounds (2-0) shot 58 percent from the field as a team and went 12 for 22 from behind the arc. Senior Joe Lawson led all scorers with 22 points, and six other Greyhounds scored at least 6 points to complete a total team effort over the Wildcats. Brennan McElroy finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.
Starting guard Lucas Barker finished with six points and six assists, and Dai-Jon Parker had 11 points on 3-6 three-point shooting. Jordan Loyd totaled 11 points, three assists and two boards.
As a team, UIndy finished the game with 23 assists from six different player, and just 11 turnovers.
"That starts with Lucas Barker and the way he passes the basketball," Coach Stan Gouard told WICR following the win. "Those guys in the locker room right now want to know how many assists they have versus points, and that says a lot about our guys."
Defensively, the Hounds held the 'Cats to 36 percent shooting, and held Marcus Hall – their lone double-figure scorer Friday – scoreless in 23 minutes. Â
"One thing I'm most proud about is how we defended," Gouard noted. "We really got to these guys early and took them out of what they were trying to get in to, and as a result they missed some shots."
Northern Michigan (0-2) – which fell to 17th-ranked Lewis in Friday's game, 78-57 – struggled to keep up with UIndy from the opening tip.
It took little time for the Greyhounds to create space on the scoreboard. Up 10-6 at the first media break, UIndy tore off a 13-2 run before play stopped at the under-12 timeout. Soon enough, the Greyhounds made it 32-10, and continued to push out ahead.
The end result was a 30-8 run across 11 minutes, and a 48-21 lead heading into the locker rooms at the half.
Lawson led all scorers with 14 points at the break, and for a stretch from 6:46 to 4:35 was outscoring Northern Michigan by himself.
As a team, the Crimson and Grey poured in 63 percent of their shots from the field in the opening half, including 8 of 12 three-pointers. UIndy also turned nine Wildcat turnovers into 14 points.
The intermission did little to cool the Hounds' hot shooting touch, as Northern Michigan Head Coach Bill Sall was forced to call a timeout less than four minutes in to the second half on the heels of a Lawson slam that capped a quick 10-2 UIndy run.
UIndy showed its depth in the final 20 minutes, winning the half 40-30 and getting significant contributions from several non-starters. Eric Davidson totaled 11 points in 19 minutes, hitting all three of his 3-point attempts. Kendall Vieke went 2-for-2 from long range, finishing with 8 points in 14 minutes.
Salim Gloyd went 2-for-3 from deep, tallying seven points and two rebounds. Martyce Kimbrough dished three assists in 17 minutes.
UIndy will return to action this upcoming Wednesday, Nov. 19, hosting Grace College (Ind.) in the Hounds' home opener. Tip is set for 7 p.m. ET.
