Three double-doubles power home-opening win

INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy men's basketball team (3-0) cruised to an 84-63 win versus NAIA Grace College in the 2014-15 home opener.  Three Greyhounds notched double-doubles on the night, led by senior Joe Lawson's 20 points,16 boards, a school-record-tying seven blocks and three steals.

For the second time in three games, Lawson and Brennan McElroy (15 pts, 11 reb) each had 10-plus points and 10-plus rebounds, but junior Lucas Barker joined the double-double party Wednesday, amassing 14 points and 11 assists.  It marked the first time three Hounds reached the statistical milestone on the same night since game-by-game stats became available in 2000-01.

Fresh off a win versus NAIA No. 20 Ashford Saturday, the Lancers (6-2) managed to shot just 33 percent from the field against the active Greyhound defense.  Senior Niko Read nearly single-handedly kept Grace in the game by draining 7 of 11 shots from behind the arc.

After finding themselves down 11-8 early, the Hounds ran off 21 unanswered points to seize all the momentum.  Five Greyhounds scored during the flurry, included eight points from Lawson.  The UIndy big man reached his double-double by halftime, compiling 10 points and 12 rebounds in the first 20 minutes alone.

Grace made just seven field goals while shooting a paltry 22 percent in the first half as the Hounds took a 40-24 lead into the break.

UIndy scored the first 10 points of the second half to up the deficit to a game-high 26 points with 17 minutes to play.  Barker capped the run with his only 3-pointer of the night.

The Hounds pushed the lead to 26 points again with nine minutes left.  Grace whittled it to 15 before ultimately falling by the final margin of 21.

Lawson's rebounding total of 16 not only set a new career high for the Indy native but also marked the most by a Greyhound since All-American Darius Adams grabbed 17 boards versus Lewis Jan. 15, 2011.

Meanwhile, Lawson's seven blocked shots matched one of the older stats in the UIndy record book.  Not since 1977 when Steve Kahl swatted seven Bellarmine shot attempts has a Greyhound had so many blocks.

Led by Read's shooting performance, the Lancers hit 11 triples on the night, while only 19 of their points came in the paint.

Barker added seven rebounds to flirt with the rare triple-double.  Senior Kendall Vieke hit three treys on the way to 11 points, Jordan Loyd had nine points nad five assists, while Eric Davidson chipped in eight points and Martyce Kimbrough five.

The Greyhounds host another NAIA team in Purdue North Central Saturday.  Tip time from Nicoson Hall is scheduled for 3 p.m.
