Men's Soccer on to GLVC Final with 1-0 upset of #17 Drury

INDIANAPOLIS- The UIndy Men's Soccer team kept its season alive Friday night in dramatic fashion, taking a 1-0 win over #17 Drury in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament semifinal at Quincy.

With the win, UIndy (11-5-3) advances to its second-straight GLVC Championship Tournament final, and its third in five years. The Greyhounds, who have never won a GLVC Tournament Championship, have made all three of their trips to the final match under current Head Coach John Higgins.  The win also served as revenge for UIndy, which lost to Drury (15-4-0) by an identical 1-0 result during the regular season.

Neither team could score through the first 86 and a half minutes of the match, in a staunchly defensive matchup. Casey Zimmerman put away the eventual Greyhound gamewinner on a ball from Patrick O'Brien. Zimmerman took the ball from O'Brien on the left side of the 18-yard box, cut inside and bent a shot into the top right corner for the winner, and his second goal of the season.

"It feels great to make it back after an up and down season but at the same time we remember last year and how tough it was to lose in the final and we don't want to feel that again," senior keeper Andrew Verhonik said. Lewis and Quincy are both great sides so we're going to have to be ready on Sunday no matter who we play."

Verhonik made one save on the night to preserve the eighth UIndy shutout of the season. Daniel Wellmann was the lone Greyhound to take more than one shot in the match, with Drury out-shooting UIndy 10-8 in the match.

The Greyhounds advance to face the winner of tonight's top-seeded Quincy and four-seed Lewis match. The GLVC final will be played Sunday afternoon at 3:00 EST from Quincy's Legends Field.
