UIndy's Tiegs named Pitching Coach at Indiana State

INDIANAPOLIS – Former Greyhound pitcher and three-year Pitching Coach Jordan Tiegs has accepted a job in the same role at Division I Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind.

Tiegs, a native of Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, first came to Indianapolis to compete for Head Coach Gary Vaught as a senior in 2009 after stops at Saulk Valley CC (2006-07) and the College of Charleston (2008).  After graduating from UIndy, Tiegs went on to play professional baseball, spending two seasons in the Frontier League with the Evansville Otters ('09) and the Oakland County Cruisers ('10).

"We bring in high quality guys like Jordan to help make our program better, and if the opportunity comes for them to move on then we support them all the way," said Vaught. "It was not an easy decision for him to make, believe me. Jordan has been very loyal to our team since coming here as a player, but this is a move that will help him and we could not be happier for him."

In his three years with the program, Tiegs has helped shape the Greyhound pitching staff into one of the best in the Great Lakes Valley conference and Midwest Region. Over the past two seasons Tiegs has mentored Matthew Kaplanis to back-to-back finishes in the GLVC top 10 for earned run average.

He mentored a 2012 UIndy pitching staff that set a new program record for shutouts (11, one of which was a no-hitter), while ranking second in the school annals in strikeouts (425). The team also ranked 18th in the nation in earned run average (3.27) helping UIndy win 46 games and earn their second-ever NCAA Division II Championship appearance.

In addition, Tiegs mentored future-professionals Donovan Drake and JaVaun West.  Drake, a 2012 ABCA All-American and Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year, went on to sign with the Atlanta Braves organization, while all-region hurler West continued his pitching career in the independent Frontier League.

"He is very well thought of in the coaching community, and he's passed on multiple offers to stay with UIndy," noted Vaught. "This opportunity is great for him and for the Indiana State program."

Tiegs will adopt a pitching staff at Indiana State that led the Missouri Valley Conference last season in ERA (3.34) and was third in opponent batting average (.240), featuring just one senior in the starting rotation.

Mark Walther, last season's volunteer assistant, will fill in Tiegs' shoes as the new UIndy Pitching Coach.

"We brought Mark in to learn from Jordan, and I have all the confidence in the world of him," Vaught said.

Vaught and the rest of the staff will begin the spring slate with a weekend series Feb. 13 at North Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga.
