Women's tennis drops competitive 4-3 match at Butler

Senior Taylor Eckert won No. 6 singles at Butler
INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's tennis squad headed a few miles up I-65 to take on Butler, falling 4-3 in a competitive match top to bottom.

The Greyhounds took the No. 3 doubles match behind the efforts of senior Kasey Land and junior Brooke Boyts. The pair defeated Butler's Angelina Qin and Jocelyn Koester, 6-2.

The Bulldogs handled No. 2 doubles, as the freshman/sophomore pair of Maria Mendes and Macey Speer fell 6-1 to Grace Hyde and Konstantina Adami, Butler's own first/second year combo.

In the Division-I best-of-seven format, the team that takes two of three doubles matches gains the doubles point. With a chance to seal the opening point in No. 1 doubles, UIndy's Allie Smith and Taylor Eckert lost a tough 7-5 decision to Stephanie McLaughlin and Kailey Eaton. The Greyhound duo led 5-4 and was on match point, but surrendered the advantage as the Bulldogs stormed from behind to seal the win, and ultimately the first point of the match.

The Greyhounds continued to press their Division I foe throughout the six singles matches, picking up wins in No. 4, 5 and 6 singles.

Perhaps the most commanding victory across the singles lineup was freshman Selenay Heper's 6-3, 6-2 win over Qin. The Greyhound newcomer moved to 2-0 in singles play for the young dual match season.

Boyts won No. 5 singles in come-from-behind fashion over Hyde. After losing the opening set, 5-7, the Goshen, Ind., native bounced back to win the second set, 6-4, and the tiebreaker, 10-2.

Similarly, Eckert needed three sets to finish off Koester for the Hounds' third point in No. 6 singles. The UIndy senior took the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second, 5-7. With the match tied 1-1, Eckert edged Koester 10-7 in the decisive tiebreak set.

In No. 1 singles, Smith again looked across the net at McLaughlin, a Bulldog senior that has won over 30 singles matches in her career. The sophomore Greyhound dropped the first set 3-6, but was resilient in taking the second, 7-5. With Smith up 4-1 in the second, McLaughlin threatened to run away with the set and match, taking over the set and rallying to a 5-4 edge. Despite being down on match point, Smith regained momentum and rolled to a 7-5 win. In the tiebreaker, McLaughlin narrowly took a 10-8 decision to clinch the match and point.

One court over, UIndy freshman Maria Mendes fell to Adami in No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Speer also dropped No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-3 against Eaton.

UIndy will turn around and host Illinois State Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the UIndy Tennis Center.
