INDIANAPOLIS – A career-high 24 points from
Princess German wasn't enough to keep the 16th-ranked Drury Panthers from running away in a 78-56 victory over the Greyhounds Friday night in Nicoson Hall.
In the first game of the full conference season, the Panthers (8-2, 2-0 GLVC) outscored UIndy 49-28 in the second period to pull away in a once-close contest.
Employing a man-to-man defense, the Greyhounds (4-6, 1-1) forced the Panthers to go deep in the shotclock and put up errant shots, resulting in just 1-for-11 shooting early on for the visitors. At the first media break, UIndy held a sizeable 10-2 lead on the strength of that swarming defense and
Kelly Walter's six points.
UIndy didn't make a basket from 15:12 until 10:02, however, allowing the Panthers to claw back on a 10-0 run to pull within 13-12 at the second media. Drury continued its spurt, eventually making it 20-13 on the heels of an 18-3 run.
The Greyhounds responded in the final stretch of the opening half, and went into the locker rooms down just 29-28. Walter and German combined to score 13 of the Hounds' final 15 points.
Walter led all scorers at the break with 14 points behind a 7-for-7 mark at the free throw line. UIndy held the conference's second-highest scoring offense to just 31-percent (11 of 35) from the field, including limiting DU's leading scorers Annie Armstrong and Sanayika Shields to a combined 3-for-10.
The Panthers tore out of the halftime break on a 13-2 run to open up a 42-30 lead. For the first part of the frame German helped keep the Greyhounds within striking distance by scoring all but two of UIndy's first 10 points of the half.
Drury opened up its biggest lead at 52-38 by the second media timeout, and upped it to 60-42 just minutes later. Unlike they did in the first period, the Hounds were unable to keep pace down the stretch as the Panthers' lead swelled.
After keeping DU's offense in check the first half, UIndy surrendered 49-percent shooting in the second, including a sharp 6-for-11 clip from long range.
German was able to consistently penetrate Drury's defense, resulting in a lofty 6-for-10 shooting performance and a career-best 12-for-16 mark at the free throw stripe. Her previous career high was a 21-point output at Grand Valley State earlier this season.
Walter finished with 18 points and nearly doubled her best career night at the free throw line going 11-for-11. The rest of the Hounds combined for 14 points on 5-for-18 shooting.
The hustle stats hurt UIndy, as the Hounds committed 20 turnovers and gave up 17 offensive rebounds, resulting in 24 points off turnovers and 23 second-chance points for the Panthers.
UIndy will get a chance to rebound Sunday when Missouri S&T visits Nicoson Hall. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
