INDIANAPOLIS - UIndy never trailed in a 69-57 all-around victory over the visiting Missouri S&T Lady Miners Sunday afternoon in Nicoson Hall.
Kelly Walter finished with her first career double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds,
Princess German led the team with 18 points and
Carly Lythjohan totaled 13.
The teams played on ice skates in the opening period, as each team wanted to push the pace and use little of the shotclock.
UIndy (5-6, 2-1 GLVC) built a comfortable 25-13 lead – its largest of the half – with 8:50 remaining, but the Lady Miners (4-7, 0-3) chipped away at the deficit with a 14-5 run to pull within 30-27. A late three-pointer from
Devin Ferguson gave the Hounds a 33-27 lead they took into the halftime break.
Lythjohan, who went 0-7 in Friday's loss, bounced back to lead the Hounds with 10 first-half points on 4-for-5 shooting, including a pair of triples. German picked up where she left off after setting a career-best with 24 points Friday, scoring eight in the first half.
The Greyhounds had 10 assists to just five turnovers in the opening period, markedly better than their 0.5 season assist-to-turnover ratio coming into the contest.
The second half tempo matched the first, but the Greyhounds were able to dictate the momentum for most of the period as they had for the entire contest. UIndy finished with game 10 fast break points, 11 second chance points and 16 points off of 10 S&T turnovers.
The Lady Miners pulled within 48-45 with just under 10:00 left, but back-to-back three-pointers from
Kelly Walter stretched the Hounds' lead back to nine.
UIndy continued to put it on the visitors, using a 13-0 run that encompassed nearly four minutes of game time to all but seal the second GLVC victory of the season.
For just the second time this season the Hounds finished with more assists (18) than turnovers (11), and outrebounded their opponent (38 to 29) for just the third time.
Freshman
Sarah Costello dished a team-high six assists to go with four points, four boards and a steal. Sophomore
Nicole Anderson nearly completed her second double-double of the season with nine points and 10 rebounds, and also chipped in three assists, one block and one steal.
True freshman
Devin Ferguson played an active 23 minutes off the bench, accounting for 6 points, two rebounds, a block and a steal. She hit a timely three-pointer in the second half, as well as a crucial offensive rebound/putback.
It was the sixth time German has led the team in scoring this season, and eighth game in which she's scored double figures.
UIndy shot 44 percent (24 of 55) from the floor compared to 36 percent (20-55) for the visitors.
The Hounds hit the road next week for matchups against William Jewell Jan. 8 and Rockhurst Jan. 10.
