LIBERTY, MO. – The below-freezing temperatures in Liberty, Missouri, seemed to cool UIndy's shooting touch in a 74-44 loss against William Jewell Thursday night in the Mabee Center.
UIndy shot just over 27 percent (15-54) from the floor – a season low – including a chilly 5-for-22 mark from long range.
Turnovers and a cold-shooting first half plagued the Greyhounds from the start, as they finished the opening period with 20 points, the lowest point total for any half this season.
The Greyhounds (5-7, 2-2 GLVC) briefly held a lead, but William Jewell (7-5, 2-2) quickly erased it with an 11-0 run. A three-pointer from Katie Finn capped that run and pushed the Cardinals' lead up to 14-6, and minutes later Finn splashed in another to make it 18-8.
UIndy hit a cold streak following the first media break, making just one field goal in a five-minute stretch. Consecutive free throws and a fastbreak layup from
Princess German finally snapped the drought and made it 18-12.
A late 9-2 spurt to close the half gave the Cardinals their biggest lead at 35-20 heading into the locker rooms.
The Greyhounds shot just 25 percent (6-24) in the opening period, compared to William Jewell's 12-for-27 output.
Both squads struggled offensively coming out of the break, combining to score two points in the first three-plus minutes before back-to-back buckets from freshman
Ashley Montanez cut the Hounds' deficit to 38-25.
But that was as close as the Greyhounds would get. The hosts responded with an 11-0 run fueled by six free throws to make it 49-25, and continued to widen the gap until it was 56-30 by the second media timeout.
Down the stretch the Cardinals continued outscore the Greyhounds, resulting in UIndy's most lopsided loss of the season with a minus-30 point differential.
William Jewell went 23 of 29 from the free throw line, and shot just over 40 percent from the floor (22-54). The Cardinals also got a big boost from reserves, resulting in 29 total bench points.
German finished with a team-high 14 points, and
Sarah Costello and
Kelly Walter followed with seven points apiece. Montanez tallied six points and eight rebounds.
The Greyhounds get a chance to rebound when they travel to Kansas City, Mo., for a meeting with Rockhurst Saturday before starting a four-game homestand. Tip-off is set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
