Greyhounds stifle Prairie Stars' offense in 58-48 victory

INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy smothered visiting Illinois Springfield in a 58-48 win Saturday afternoon in Nicoson Hall, totaling a season-high 13 steals while forcing 23 Prairie Star turnovers.

The Greyhounds (9-8, 6-3 GLVC) scored 19 points off of those turnovers, and had each player contribute at least one steal. UIndy also limited UIS to just 31 percent shooting and held an opponent under 50 points for the first time this season.

"That was a really physical game as far as I'm concerned," Head Coach Constantin Popa told WICR following the game. "There was a lot of contact and we just fought through that stuff."

UIS (5-12, 1-8) and UIndy combined for 50 free throws on 41 personal fouls, and each squad converted on just 70 percent of its freebies.

The Greyhounds used quick hands to grab four steals in the first four minutes of the game, and went into the first media break with a sizeable 16-5 lead. The Prairie Stars trimmed the deficit to just 23-19 by the final media, but UIndy closed out the period strong enough to take a 30-22 lead into the break.

UIndy totaled eight steals in the first period, and racked up 13 points off of 13 UIS turnovers. Two days after finishing with a career-high four steals versus McKendree, freshman Sarah Costello had three at half against UIS.

In the second period, after a slow start that saw the teams combine for just five points in the first five minutes, the Greyhounds raced to their biggest lead of the day at 41-25 on an 11-3 run eight minutes in.

The Prairie Stars hung around down the stretch, however, and moved within single digits at 51-42 with just under five minutes left. UIS got as close as 51-45 on a four-minute scoring drought from the Greyhounds, but UIndy sank seven free throws to close out the victory.

The Hounds were heavily outrebounded in the first half, 24 to 13, but bounced back in the second and nearly matched UIS on the boards (15 to 14).

Princess German led the Greyhounds with 24 points, scoring 10 from the charity stripe. She also had three steals, two assists and a block. Kelly Walter netted 20 points to go along with seven boards and a steal.

Nicole Anderson scored seven points, adding four rebounds, two steals and a block; and Costello finished with five points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists.

UIndy shot just 34 percent, including a 7-for-21 mark from three-point land, but scored 21 at the free throw line to help put away the Prairie Stars.

"There's no easy game for us," Popa conceded. "I don't expect any from this point on, so we just have to keep moving forward and keep making progress."

The Greyhounds moved over .500 for the first time this season at 9-8 overall, but face stiff competition on the road next week. Thursday, Jan. 29, UIndy travels to face Wisconsin-Parkside before heading to No. 1 Lewis the following Saturday.
