INDIANAPOLIS – With six players in double figures, the No. 7 UIndy men's basketball team (11-0, 3-0 GLVC) kept its season-starting win streak intact with a
98-74 conference win against visiting Missouri S&T Sunday afternoon. The Greyhounds shot 60 percent from the floor while assisting on 21 of 30 buckets in the convincing win.
Despite being limited to just 18 minutes due to foul trouble, senior
Joe Lawson led all scorers with 19 points for the Hounds. He and junior
Jordan Loyd, who scored 17, combined to shoot 23-of-28 from the foul line, as the Greyhounds finished with a season-high 30 made free throws.
Senior
Brennan McElroy stuffed the stat sheet with 15 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocks and a steal. Senior
Dai-Jon Parker added 14 points, while junior
Lucas Barker and senior
Kendall Vieke each had 13.
Two days after limiting 19th-ranked Drury to 33 percent field goal shooting in the second half, the UIndy defense clamped down on the visiting Miners (8-3, 1-2), holding them to just 37-percent shooting Sunday, including a paltry 29 percent in the final 20 minutes.
"I commended our guys after the game on how well we guarded, not only tonight but during both games this week," said UIndy head coach
Stan Gouard. "Our guys are really buying in on the defensive end. The offensive is going to be okay, but I love the way we're playing defense."
S&T connected on 27 of its 73 shot attempts while assisting on just six of them. Conversely, the Greyhounds shot at an even .600 clip, while only nine of their 30 field goals were unassisted.
"We're also doing a good job of sharing the basketball," Gouard continued. "We're finding the open man and no one's been selfish, so we're doing a good job of moving the basketball and finding the mismatches."
Sans three early ties, the Greyhounds led wire to wire. Up 21-18 early, UIndy went on a 13-4 run to build its first real cushion. The surge was capped by back-to-back triples from senior
Kendall Vieke and also featured a three from freshman
Eric Davidson. UIndy went on to lead by as many as 17 in the first half before the score settled at 48-38 at the break.
The opening period saw a ton of stoppages, including a combined 25 personal fouls between the two cross-divisional rivals. Lawson was whistled for his second foul barely three minutes in and sat the balance of the period. S&T, however, endured with six players picking up at least two personals, including four with three.
Barker opened the second half with his lone triple, sending a message that there would be no let down from the home team. Though the Miners managed to cut a 17-point deficit to 11 with 14:22 to go, the Hounds eventually pushed the lead to 20 or higher for the final nine-and-a-half minutes of play.
UIndy's all-around performance was punctuated by a rim-rocking two-handed jam by junior
Jamel Crocker with 90 seconds left. Crocker's dunk made him the ninth and final Hound in the scoring column, supplementing his four rebounds and one blocked shot.
The Greyhounds load up the bus next week and head west to William Jewell College Thursday night and Rockhurst University Saturday afternoon. Tip time from WJC Thursday is scheduled for 8:30 pm ET.
