ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – UIndy volleyball split a pair of matches Saturday, falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21) to No. 23 Lewis before sweeping Kentucky State 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-21) in a neutral site affair.
UIndy (5-11, 2-4 GLVC) was overmatched against the nationally-ranked Flyers (15-1, 6-0) in the first match of the day, getting out-hit .306 to .137 in the defeat.
"We really just got outplayed," Head Coach
Jason Reed said. "We gave them nearly ten points a set in our errors but still fought to keep it close."
The match featured 12 ties and five lead changes, but the Flyers kept the Hounds at bay throughout the three-game contest. UIndy never held a lead late in any set, but in the third looked poised to prolong the match after consecutive kills from sophomore
Kacee Salyers made it 21-21. After a Lewis timeout, the hosts scored four straight to seal the match.
"We get close and then we make a mistake or two and we start getting safe," Reed noted.
Junior
Becca Lira led the squad with 12 kills, followed by Salyers' six. Freshman
Maggie Gibson – making her second collegiate start – totaled 23 assists. A trio of Hounds finished with 10 digs.
Shortly after the loss UIndy bounced back with a convincing sweep against regional opponent Kentucky State. The Hounds hit an even .300 and held the Thorobreds to a mere .098, in large part due to 10 team blocks.
"We saw some great resilience with our young team against Kentucky State," Reed commented, following the victory. "I thought we really controlled about every aspect of that match."
Junior
Shelby Ruffner wreaked havoc at the net with six block assists, and four other Hounds recorded multiple block assists.
Freshman
Kate Bontrager led the squad and set a career-high with 11 kills, and classmate
Sarah Skinner followed with eight kills and .615 (8-0-13) percentage.
UIndy has a mid-week stop at Saint Joseph's Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m. before returning home next weekend.
NOTES- UIndy and Lewis have now met 59 times, with Lewis holding a 44-15 all-time series record.
- UIndy holds a 9-1 series record against the Thorobreds. Prior to Saturday the teams' last meeting was in 2002.
- Bontrager's 11 kills more than doubled her previous high of five, which she recorded in Saturday's opening match against Lewis.
- The Hounds hit .300 or better for the fourth time this season against Kentucky State.
