Greyhounds cruise to sweep of Hawks on Friday night

INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in front of their home crowd for the first time in three weeks, the University of Indianapolis volleyball team made it five straight wins in the Ruth Lilly Center with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-14) triumph over Quincy University on Friday night.

Junior Shelby Ruffner and sophomore Kacee Salyers had 11 kills each to lead the Greyhounds (11-14, 7-5 GLVC), who finished with a .281 hitting percentage on the night. Ruffner led all players with a .563 (11-2-16) hitting percentage while Salyers collected her 11 kills on 24 swings to record a .375 attacking percentage.

As good as the Greyhounds were on the offensive end, they were just as impressive defensively, finishing with 12 blocks on the night. Maggie Gibson and Katie Voelz had seven block assists each while Ruffner helped turn back five Hawk attempts. Quincy (11-14, 5-7 GLVC) was held to a .111 hitting percentage on the night.

Trailing 7-6 early in the first set, UIndy rattled off seven of the next nine points to take the lead for good in game one. The Greyhounds would extend their lead to as many as seven points, but a late run from the Hawks cut the Hounds lead to 23-21 in late in the game before kills from Salyers and Kate Bontrager put the first set away.

UIndy jumped out to a 4-0 lead to seize hold of a lead they would maintain the rest of the set. Quincy clawed back to within a point at 8-7, but the Greyhounds answered with 13 of the next 19 points to distance themselves from the Hawks.

The Hounds put the Hawks away with ease in the third set, finishing with 17 kills hitting .350 while holding Quincy to a .086 attacking percentage in the deciding set.

Bontrager and Becca Lira finished with nine kills each for UIndy. Gibson topped the Greyhounds with 38 assists on the night and added a trio of kills. Hailey Brown dug up 22 Quincy attack attempts on the night while Jamie Wallace dug up 10 balls for the Hounds.

UIndy looks to make it three straight wins overall and six in a row on their home floor on Saturday, when they take on the Bulldogs of Truman State University. First serve from Ruth Lilly Center is set for 3:00 p.m.
