Greyhounds rout Saint Joseph's 3-0 in Tuesday night showdown

INDIANAPOLIS – For the second time this season the UIndy volleyball squad swept in-state rival Saint Joseph's, this one by scores of 25-17, 25-15 and 25-22 Tuesday night in Ruth Lilly.

The victory added to the ever-growing 28-match win streak the Greyhounds hold over the Pumas, a feat that stretches more than 14 years. UIndy began the streak Sept. 14, 2001, and has since won every meeting – including 84 of 92 overall sets played.

But for UIndy (14-15, 10-6 GLVC), this particular win meant more than simply keeping the impressive streak alive, it meant taking another step toward securing a berth in the 2015 GLVC Tournament. The Hounds have their eye on the program's 16th-straight conference tournament bid, currently sitting atop all wild card contenders in the standings.

The Greyhounds controlled nearly every facet of the match, finishing with more kills (39 to 30), digs (45 to 43) and assists (37 to 26), and recording a better attack percentage (.230 to .144) than the Pumas, who fell to 7-20 overall and 2-14 in-conference.

"We served well tonight and that allowed a lot of hitters to contribute," Head Coach Jason Reed said, after the win. "When those hitters got their chances they did a great job capitalizing. I thought all around we showed great energy right from the start."

One area UIndy excelled was the serving game, where it racked up a season-high 13 service aces, just one shy of the program's GLVC match record. The Hounds had five in the first set alone, helping them cruise to a 25-17 win.

The second set proved to be a bit trickier, as it included eight ties and four lead changes. But a 16-4 rally to close the set lifted UIndy to a 25-16 victory and 2-0 match edge.

The third and final frame was the closest on the scoreboard and between the lines, with the visiting Pumas out-hitting the Greyhounds .316 to .194 while recording three blocks. In the end, leading 24-22, junior Shelby Ruffner dropped in one of her team-high 10 kills to seal the match.

Ruffner recorded her 10 kills on a stellar .500 (10-1-18) attack percentage, adding a block assist. Sophomore Kacee Salyers led the outsides with nine kills and a .438 (9-2-16) hitting mark.

Junior Becca Lira (8 kills, 4 digs) and freshman Kate Bontrager (7 kills, 2 solo blocks) also turned in solid performances, as did freshman setter Maggie Gibson (34 assists, 9 digs).

Senior Hailey Brown paced the Hounds with 18 digs, and also led the serving effort with five aces, matching a career best.

"We have a big weekend coming up," Reed noted. "This was a great effort tonight but we still have work to do."

UIndy wraps up the regular season with a pair of GLVC East Division rivals this weekend. The Hounds first meet No. 23 Lewis Friday at 7 p.m. before closing with their Senior Day match against Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday at 3 p.m.
