Football caps regular season with convincing road win

RENSSELAER, Ind. – The No. 13 UIndy football team (10-1, 8-0 GLVC) ended its 2015 regular season with an impressive 47-24 win at in-state Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon. Senior quarterback Connor Barthel led the way on 24-for-30 passing for a career-high 371 yards and a touchdown while also adding a pair of rushing TDs.

The result keeps the Greyhounds in good position for a postseason bid. UIndy, who was sixth in the latest Super Region Four rankings, will await tomorrow's announcement of the 2015 NCAA Division II playoff field. The top seven teams from each region will earn a postseason berth. The selection show will air on NCAA.com Sunday at 5 p.m.

Unlike the teams' thrilling four-overtime battle in Indianapolis last season, the Greyhounds left no doubt at Saint Joseph's Saturday on a perfect fall afternoon at Alumni Stadium. UIndy racked up 576 total yards and found the end zone six times before its first punt.

The Hounds kept the Pumas off balance with a number of big offensive plays, breaking off 12 gains of 15 yards or more. Five different players accounted for those gains, including a 75-yard punt return by Reece Horn in the second quarter that set up a TD.

Horn would finish the day with 216 all-purpose yards, including 141 receiving yards on 11 receptions. The All-American candidate added to his growing list of school records in the second period, catching career ball No. 257 to set a new all-time mark for the program.

The Greyhounds wasted no time getting on the board. After the UIndy defense forced a 3-and-out to start the game, the Greyhound "O" needed just two snaps to take the initial lead. Sophomore Andrew Walker raced 59 yards for a lengthy touchdown, good for his 11th straight game with a score.

The Pumas (4-6, 3-5) answered with a scoring drive of their own, but the Hounds pulled away with three consecutive touchdowns to build a 20-point lead midway through the second quarter. UIndy would add two more TDs in the third to keep it out of reach.

The third quarter also brought the first Greyhound turnover in four weeks – a span of 221 minutes of play. With the wind being a factor all day, a purposeful low punt by the Pumas was ruled to prematurely touch a Greyhound player, allowing the home team to pounce on the live ball and gain possession at the UIndy 31.

Two plays later, however, Korey Rogan returned the favor with his second interception of the season, picking off SJC quarterback Wade Burtron to give the ball back to the Hounds.

Also for the defensive side, junior linebacker Rob Dury led all players with season-high 14 tackles, including two or a loss. Aeneas White added nine stops and Derrick Bryant eight.

Bryant, Dillon Dallas, O'rion Elder and Erik Hart accounted for the Hounds' three sacks, while Robert Williams was credited with two pass break-ups.

Meanwhile, Walker amassed 138 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Sophomore Alex Kimack hit a new personal best with 113 receiving yards in six catches.

The Greyhounds will now await tomorrow's announcement of the 2015 NCAA Division II playoff field. The top seven teams from each region will earn a postseason bid. The Hounds were ranked No. 6 in the latest Super Region Four rankings. The selection show will air on NCAA.com Sunday at 5 p.m.

NOTES
The Greyhounds finished the regular season with a 10-1 record, marking just the second 10-win regular season in program history (2013). The 2012 squad also amassed 10 victories, finishing 10-3 after earning a first-round playoff win … Saturday's game was contested on a natural grass surface, just the second grass field the Hounds have played on all season (Lincoln) … Freshman Malik Higgins recorded UIndy's longest reception of the season with a 68 yarder in the third quarter … Walker is now the only Greyhound since 1983 (first year game-by-game data is available) to find the end zone in 11 consecutive games.
