INDIANAPOLIS – Opposing a Grand Valley State program that consistently ranks among the best in the region, the UIndy swimming & diving teams held their own despite dropping both the men's and women's sides. The Lakers topped the Greyhound women 159-82, while the Hounds men's squad were edged 134-109.
"This was a great test for us," said head coach
Jason Hite after the meet. "Grand Valley is ranked higher on both sides in DII right now, but we gave them a run for their money."
After Grand Valley took the top spot in each of the first three heats, freshman stand out
Vitor Botana gave the Hounds a first-place finish in the 1000 freestyle (9:45.36). Botana would later win the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:39.27.
Sophomore
Sebastian Konnaris followed Botana with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:42.62), and freshman
Stefanie Haholiades gave the women their first top spot in the 50 freestyle (23.77). Haholiades was the lone Greyhound woman to record a first-place finish, later topping the 100 freestyle field (52.93).
"We had some great performances on both sides," added Hite. "Our team stayed right with them in most races. We won a lot of touches at the wall and raced hard."
The youth for Indianapolis' program was once again on display at the Ruth Lily Pool, as five of the team's seven first-place heat finishes came from freshmen. Along with Botana and Haholiades,
George Oancea also won the men's 200 IM (1:51.76).
Senior veteran
Marius Bornkessel tallied a first-place finish in the 50 freestyle (21.42).
On the women's side, senior
Hannah Schuster recorded a second-place finish in 200 freestyle (1:58.13), and also helped the 200 freestyle relay team to a second overall finish along with Haholiades,
Maddy Mahoney and
Malvina Shoukri.
"I am very excited with the growth and progress of the team and am ready to see them have some phenomenal performances when we are test at the House of Champions next weekend."
Next weekend's three-day House of Champions meet begins Friday evening from IUPUI.
