CANTON, Ohio – Playing their second game in less than 24 hours, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball remains in search of their first win of the year following an 80-66 defeat at the hands of Malone University on Saturday (Nov. 14) afternoon.
Â
Four Greyhounds (0-2) recorded double-digits in points, with senior
Princess German leading all scorers with 23 points.
Tina Negoescu (13 pts),
Ashley Montanez (12 pts) and
Nicole Anderson (10 pts) also made significant contributions on the offensive end, but the Hounds were done in by 15 three-pointers from the Pioneers (1-0) in defeat.
Â
"On the offensive end I thought we did a pretty good job," Head coach
Constantin Popa said. "But it was good to see our team generate more offense and take care of the ball a lot better than we did last night. We saw a lot of good things from our lineup today, but it's tough to win when you give up 15 threes in a game. We just need to keep improving as we try to get our rotation set. Now we've got a quick turnaround before a couple tough ones at home and we'll be ready for them."
Â
The Greyhounds grabbed an early lead thanks to a triple from Anderson, but the Pioneers would knock down four threes in the opening quarter to grab the lead. UIndy closed the opening 10 minutes on a 5-0 run to close the gap to 17-13 after one.
Â
UIndy cut the lead to two with an
Emily Thomas bucket to start the second quarter, but three consecutive triples from Malone stretched the lead out to 26-17 and when the halftime horn sounded, the Greyhounds trailed, 34-28.
Â
Malone opened up a double-digit lead early in the third quarter, but the Greyhounds ended the period on an 8-0 run to get within striking distance at 52-49 with 10 minutes to play. But a 12-3 Pioneer run to open the fourth quarter was enough to put the game out of reach.
Â
UIndy connected on 44.4 percent (24-for-54) of their field goals, knocking down 37 percent (10-for-27) of their three pointers and eight-of-nine free throws. Malone shot 44 percent (22-for-50) from the floor, burying 51.7 percent (15-for-29) of their triples and 21-of-28 free throws.
Â
The Greyhounds held a 34-25 advantage on the glass with German and Negoescu pulling down seven rebounds each to lead all players. The Hounds cut down on the turnovers, committing only 16 to five for the Pioneers. Malone was able to take advantage of those 16 mistakes, turning them into 19 points at the other end.
Â
Next up for the Greyhounds is their regular season home opener on Tuesday night, when the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville Univesity travel to Key Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m.
