INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy volleyball certainly had a lot to celebrate in Saturday's 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) win over visiting Wisconsin-Parkside in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
It began with a pre-match Senior Day ceremony, honoring the careers of
Hailey Brown,
Jamie Wallace,
Hannah Bauer and
Natalie Wichern. The 2016 graduating class has accumulated 90 wins thus far, and has reached one NCAA Elite Eight, made three NCAA trips overall and brought home the 2013 GLVC Championship.
But their story isn't over yet. With Saturday's win over the Rangers, the Greyhounds (15-16, 11-7 GLVC) clinched the East Division's three-seed in next week's conference tournament.
Entering the weekend it appeared the Hounds were headed for a wild card spot, but Wisconsin-Parkside (19-11, 10-8) dropped its match Friday night at Saint Joseph's, forcing a situation where Saturday's winner in Ruth Lilly would grab the final seed. The Rangers will still compete in the tournament as a wild card.
"I'm really proud of our girls today," Head Coach
Jason Reed said. "We came in focused and executed well all day. We're excited for next week, it will be a great opportunity for our girls to compete and play to their potential."
Bauer stood out defensively in the opening set, amassing a match-high eight digs as UIndy won 25-20. Neither team hit particularly well, but the Hounds managed to control the lead for most of the set en route to an early 1-0 match lead.
In the second the Hounds were led by junior
Becca Lira's four kills, as UIndy pulled out another 25-20 win in a set that had eight separate ties. A late 5-0 burst from the Hounds created too much distance on the scoreboard for the Rangers to overcome.
Finally, UIndy hit a sharp .375 in the third game. Sophomore
Kacee Salyers, freshman
Kate Bontrager and freshman
Katie Voelz each tallied four kills in the match-winning set.
Lira and Salyers each finished with 10 kills and hit at least .333, while freshman setter
Maggie Gibson contributed 33 assists and a team-high 12 digs. Bauer followed closely behind with 11 total digs in her final home match. Â
"Our pin hitters Kacee (Salyers) and Becca (Lira) led us offensively, and our seniors did an excellent job with passing and defense," Reed noted. "Hannah (Bauer) did a great job in right back and served well for us."
The Greyhounds will await match times for next week's GLVC Tournament, which will be at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria, Ill., Nov. 20-22.
NOTES- UIndy now leads the all-time series 22-17 over Wisconsin-Parkside. The Rangers won 3-1 earlier this season (10/2).
