INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis women's basketball team took on their first ranked opponent of the 2015-16 season on Tuesday night, falling to No. 13 Ashland University, 74-57.
Â
The Greyhounds (0-6) kept within striking distance of the nationally-ranked Eagles (4-0) until a 21-4 second quarter run from Ashland proved to be too much for the Hounds to overcome.
Â
Princess German led the Greyhounds in scoring for the sixth consecutive game, finishing with a season-high 28 points on 8-for-22 shooting, going 4-for-11 from three and 8-for-10 from the line.
Â
Andi Daugherty finished with 25 points and 12 boards and Suzy Wollenhaup added 14 points for the Eagles, who connected on 53.1 percent (26-for-49) of their shots on the day. Ashland outscored the Hounds 26-18 in the post and got 30 points from their bench on Tuesday night.
Â
"We got in foul trouble and when you have a short bench, that will catch up to you," Head coach
Constantin Popa said. "Ashland is a good team and we had some spurts where we played really well. Our kids really battled out there tonight, but we had trouble knocking down shots and they did a good job getting the ball inside, being aggressive and getting to the line."
Â
Ashland netted the first five points to open up the game, but UIndy answered with pair of German threes and a triple from
Sarah Costello to make it 9-5 Greyhounds. Â After a
Nicole Anderson jumper made it 15-11 Hounds, Ashland ripped off an 11-3 run over the final 2:38 of the first quarter to make it 22-18 Eagles after one.
Â
The Eagles held on to that momentum when the second quarter began, outscoring the Greyhounds 16-3 to open the quarter and stretch their lead to double-figures for good. When the halftime horn sounded, the Greyhounds trailed, 40-25, after being outscored 18-7 in over the second 10-minute frame.
Â
UIndy battled to keep the game close, but the Eagles' inside attack proved to be too much as Ashland extended their lead to as many as 25 points before the final horn sounded. The Greyhounds closed out the game on a 12-4 run, but it was not enough.
Â
The Hounds connected on 38.8 percent (19-for-49) of their field goal attempts, going 5-for-21 from deep and 14-for-22 at the line. At the other end, Ashland shot 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from long range and 18-for-22 at the charity stripe.
Â
The Eagles held a 35-21 advantage on the glass with the 21 rebounds a single-game low for the Hounds through six contests. Costello and Anderson had five boards each to lead the team. UIndy held a 20-17 advantage in the turnover battle, the first time this year the Greyhounds have come out on the positive side in the giveaway category.
Â
Next up for the Greyhounds is a trip to the East Coast following the Thanksgiving holiday for a pair of game in Massachusetts. First up is a showdown with the Warriors of Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. on Friday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
