Volleyball swept by 8th-ranked Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UIndy volleyball squad struggled offensively facing nationally-ranked Rockhurst Hawks Friday night, dropping the Great Lakes Valley Conference match 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-28).

The Greyhounds (12-15, 8-6 GLVC) came away with season lows in attack percentage (-.017), kills (25) and assists (22), while tying their match against Missouri S&T (Sept. 26) for most attack errors (27).

Part of that was due to the No. 8 Hawks' defensive prowess. Rockhurst (26-2, 14-0), which leads the conference in blocks and opponent hitting percentage, challenged UIndy at the net to the tune of 12 team blocks in three sets.

"Rockhurst was very good today in all aspects of the match," UIndy Head Coach Jason Reed said, following the sweep. "They served us tough, blocked well and played hard-nosed defense."

It started in the opening set, where the Hounds finished with a -.147 hitting percentage on four kills, nine errors and 34 swings. Rockhurst went on to win the frame 25-11, getting multiple kills from four individuals.

UIndy improved in the second, and was led by freshman Kate Bontrager's four kills on 10 attempts. The Hawks' Preecy Seever recorded three of her match-high five blocks during the set.

Rockhurst finished the match with a 25-18 win in the third and final frame, marking the team's 21st sweep of the season. Junior Shelby Ruffner finished with four kills in the final set, totaling a team-high eight for the match.

Reed continued: "I thought we had a good week of preparation, and the team was focused and knew our game plan. However, we weren't in system much. Our passers struggled and we put our hitters in tough spots consistently. Rockhurst made us pay."

Senior Hailey Brown led the Hounds with 12 digs, followed by freshman Bri Heffernan's 10. Freshman Maggie Gibson totaled 19 assists.

UIndy has little time to dwell on the defeat, meeting William Jewell Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.

"We will look to rebound tomorrow against William Jewell," Reed said. "Every match is big from here on out."

As it currently stands, UIndy (8-6 GLVC) sits fourth in the GLVC East division, a game behind Wisconsin-Parkside (9-5). The Hounds do hold the best record among wild card contenders, a game ahead of Truman and Missouri-St. Louis (both 7-7). The top three teams from each division plus the two wildcards will make up the GLVC Tournament at season's end.

NOTES
- UIndy leads Rockhurst 12-7 in the teams' all-time series, but has lost to the Hawks three consecutive matches.
