Turnovers trouble for Hounds in loss to Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Less than 24 hours after an opening night exhibition loss to Indiana State, the Greyhound women's basketball team were back at it Saturday afternoon, this time against the Big Ten's Illinois Fighting Illini.

The Illini put on a shooting clinic, and the Hounds didn't help themselves with 27 turnovers leading to 41 Illinois points. Ultimately, it was a 95-36 win for the Orange and Blue of Illinois.

"When you play Big Ten teams it's a whole different game," said head coach Constantine Popa following the game. "Obviously we made some mistakes, and I don't know too much about Big Ten basketball, but they certainly made us pay."

Chartice White scored seven of the first nine points for the Illini, and finished with a game-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-4 from deep for the Illinois center.

Junior Nicole Anderson put the first points on the board for Indianapolis three minutes into the opening quarter with a put-back bucket. Senior Princess German followed with a traditional three-point play to bring the Hounds to within 9-5.

After coming out in man defense, Illinois switched to a full-court press midway through the first frame. The speed and athleticism of the Illini contributed to multiple Greyhound turnovers leading to fast break opportunities.

Popa was forced to take an early time out, and his team responded. The Hounds did a better job of breaking the pressure, but missed shots from the outside would plague them throughout the opening quarter, and the game in general.

Indianapolis finished the afternoon shooting just 11-of-48 (.229) from the floor and 5-of-21 (.238) from deep.

The Hounds climbed to within 14 at the end of the first quarter, but a trio of Illini threes quickly stretched the Illinois lead to 35-12 to open the second.

German would connect on a triple of her own to stop the bleeding, but by that time Illinois had already opened up a 23 point advantage. That lead would stretch to 53-18 by halftime.

Despite a 24-4 third quarter in favor of the Illini, the Hounds hung tough in the final quarter, losing the period by only four, 18-14. Sophomore Tina Negoescu connected on two threes in the final frame, while sophomore Emily Thomas and senior Marlena Muszak also found their way into the scorebook with baskets.

For the second consecutive game, Indianapolis had trouble finding secondary scoring options. German led the way again with 15 points, but no other Hound finished with more than six points.

"It wasn't just Princess that was having a hard time finding shots tonight," said Popa of the team's scoring woes. "We need to get better, this was a tough test for us, and we have a lot of work to do before Friday."

Sophomore Sarah Costello finished with five points, but recorded a team-high five rebounds from her guard position and adding a steal, as well.

With both exhibitions now out of the way, the Hounds now shift their attention to the regular season. Indianapolis travels to North Canton, Ohio on Friday night to take on Walsh in the season opener. Tip is set for 6 p.m. EST.
