COLUMBUS, Ohio – In their final game before the holiday break, the University of Indianapolis women's basketball team got a pair of monster performances from
Nicole Anderson and
Princess German against Ohio Dominican on Saturday afternoon. But a 20-point second half deficit and a lack of offensive production from the rest of the lineup proved to be too much for the Hounds to overcome in a 77-72 loss to the Panthers.
Â
Junior and Terre Haute, Ind.-native Anderson recorded her second straight double-double and fourth of the year after finishing with a season-high 30 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Gary, Ind.-native German matched her career high with 31 points on 9 of 22 shooting and 13-for-16 from the free throw line.
Â
But the rest of the UIndy offense combined for just 11 points, going 3-for-14 from the floor as the Hounds dropped to 2-10 on the year. Four Panthers recorded double-figure points with Madi Rittinger's 18 points leading the way for Ohio Dominican who improved to 8-2 on the year.
Â
After a
Devin Ferguson three-pointer and back-to-back layups from Anderson, the Greyhounds held a slim 11-9 lead with 5:49 to play in the opening quarter. But that would be the last time the Hounds found the bucket in the opening frame as UIndy went 0-for-5 and turned the ball over five times before the end of the first while Ohio Dominican jumped out to an 18-11 lead.
Â
Three straight Anderson layups and a fastbreak bucket German brought the Hounds within four at 25-21 midway through the second, but a 9-2 Panther run stretched their lead to double-digits for the first time and make it a 34-23 game. The Greyhounds clawed back to make it 39-33 at the half with German and Anderson combining for 30 of the team's points through 20 minutes of play.
Â
Both teams opened the second half with three buckets on their first five possessions each, but the Panthers appeared to seize control of the game with a 14-0 run that put them ahead 59-39 with 4:17 to play in the third.
Â
But just as they had done in the second quarter, the Greyhounds made a charge to close out the third quarter. UIndy rattled off a 13-0 run to close out the quarter and make it a 59-52 game with Anderson and German combining for 12 of the Hounds points.
Â
UIndy kept the run going to open the fourth quarter and after a
Sarah Costello triple with 8:17 to play, the Hounds found themselves down 61-56. After both teams traded quick 4-0 runs, the Hounds came within four at 65-61 following an
Ashley Montanez layup.
Â
It was as close as the Hounds would come until 20 second left when an Anderson layup made it 73-70. The Panthers closed the game out at the line on their next two possessions.
Â
UIndy connected on 45.5 percent (25-for-55) of their field goals, going 4 of 16 from long range and 18 of 23 at the line. At the other end, the Panthers shot 43.5 percent (27-for-62) from the field, connecting on 5 of 15 three-pointers and 18 of 24 free throws.
Â
Rebounds were 37-36 in favor of UIndy with the Hounds also holding a 12-8 advantage in second chance points. Turnovers plagued the Hounds on Saturday as UIndy coughed it up 22 times with the Panthers cashing in 19 points off mistakes.
Â
The Greyhounds will have 19 days off for the holiday break before returning to action on Jan. 7 when they resume GLVC play against Maryville University in Indianapolis. Tip-off from Nicoson Hall is set for 5:30 p.m.
