Men's basketball opens GLVC season with 90-79 win over Wisconsin-Parkside

INDIANAPOLIS – Wins are not easy to come by in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, making Thursday night's 90-79 victory against the visiting Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers in the conference opener all the more significant.

UIndy's backcourt duo of Lucas Barker and Jordan Loyd combined to score 50 points, and Greyhound newcomer Ernest Maize recorded a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win, which came against the three-time defending East Division champs.

Parkside (4-2, 0-1 GLVC) – the squad that spoiled the Hounds' 17-game win streak a season ago – had few answers for the Barker-Loyd combo, as the two shot a combined 17 of 30 (.566) from the floor and a perfect 10 for 10 from the charity stripe.

Outside of the two guards, Maize stepped up with season-highs in points and rebounds, recording UIndy's second double-double of the year. The 6-7 big man also contributed three blocks in 29 minutes off the bench.

UIndy (5-2, 1-0) gained control early, using a 12-0 run to take a 19-9 lead by the under-12 media break in the first half. The Rangers had their response: an 11-1 spurt to knot the game at 20 apiece.

That sequence became a common theme throughout the game, as each side had multiple runs and momentum swings from tip-off to the final buzzer.

Barker sparked one of those runs midway through the first half. Down 25-24, the Australian point guard drained back-to-back threes to get the UIndy bench and fan base out of their seats. On the next Wisconsin-Parkside possession, Maize rejected a Kendale McCullum layup attempt and senior Joe Retic took the rebound coast to coast, finishing at the rim in transition.

Before the first half ended UIndy tore off another 9-0 run, seven of which came from Loyd as the senior converted a pair of tough jumpers and a 3-pointer.

The Hounds went into the break leading 45-34, shooting nearly 52 percent (16-31) from the field.

Parkside wouldn't roll over in the second half, however, and midway through used a 14-4 run to pull within 61-60 at the 9:53 mark. UIndy's Stan Gouard called a timeout to try and quell the run, and afterward true freshman Jimmy King began what would become a strong second half for the Roncalli alum.

The local product converted a traditional 3-point play right out of the timeout, helping the Hounds start an 11-0 run that forced Gouard's counterpart Luke Reigel to burn a timeout.

King played 16 minutes in the second half, scoring nine points while dishing three assists. His final bucket came on a stylish reverse left-handed layup that put UIndy up 11 as the final minutes ticked away.

UIndy maintained a double-figure lead the rest of the way, sealing a crucial victory against a team that's lost just eight GLVC games over the past three seasons.

Barker tied career bests with four triples and five steals, and added five assists and four boards to accompany his 22 points. Loyd yet again paced the Hounds with 28 points, chipping in seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.

Retic totaled 11 points, five assists, two rebounds and a steal, and King finished with nine points, three dimes, a rebound and a steal.

The Hounds finished over 47 percent from the floor while hitting 21 of 25 free throws, and totaled 10 steals while forcing 16 Ranger turnovers.

UIndy welcomes Lewis Saturday to continue GLVC play. The Flyers are coming off a 99-80 win at Saint Joseph's Thursday night.
