QUINCY, Ill. – The UIndy women's basketball team picked up an important 95-79 victory over the Quincy Hawks Thursday night, snapping a four-game losing skid and moving back to an even .500 in conference action.
"It's not easy to stay focused. It's not easy to stay positive. It's not easy to keep fighting game in and game out, but we did it tonight," Head Coach
Constantin Popa told WICR following game. "It's a great win for our young team, for our program. It's awesome."
The Greyhounds (10-12, 7-7 GLVC) also completed a rare feat for the second time this season, finishing with three 20-point scorers. The same three that turned the trick back on Jan. 15 against Bellarmine –
Nicole Anderson,
Kelly Walter and
Princess German – pulled it off at Quincy (13-9, 8-6) Thursday night.
"That's what it takes to win games," Popa noted after UIndy dropped the Hawks - who are second in the GLVC West standings. "It takes all of us, and our main players to produce, and that's what happened here tonight."
Aside from the trio of 20-point scorers, the theme of Thursday night's GLVC affair was the long-range proficiency from both teams. The two squads finished with a combined 28 three-pointers, each setting season highs (14 apiece) and UIndy coming within two of the program's single-game team record.
The two squads lit up the scoreboard for the entire first half, draining a combined 20 three-pointers while scoring 101 points in the opening 20 minutes.
UIndy shot 67 percent (21-31) from the floor, including 9-for-14 from long range, while the Hawks went 17-29 overall and 11-for-21 from deep. Fifteen of Quincy's first 17 shots were from beyond the arc.
Even with both teams scoring at a high rate, the Hounds were able to hold a lead for most of the period, and at one point led by 17 points at 46-29.
UIndy went into the half up 54-47, scoring the most first-half points of the season, and held a sizeable 16 to 9 rebounding advantage over the hosts.
Neither squad was able to keep up with its first half production in the second period, but the visiting Hounds were able to fend off any attempt at a comeback by the Hawks.
UIndy pushed the lead up to 20 points at 87-67 just before the final media break, and closed strong to post the highest point total of the season.
Quincy went just 3-for-12 from three-point range in the second period, finishing 14-for-33 and 29-for-59 overall.
The Greyhounds finished with the best shooting clip of season, pouring in nearly 62 percent (34-55) of their buckets, including 14-for-25 from deep.
Anderson tallied 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals, going 9-for-10 from the floor. German sank a season-high four 3-pointers en route to a 22-point outing, adding four boards, three steals and two assists. Walter scored her 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Sarah Costello went 5-for-7, netting 14 points, two steals, two rebounds and a block; while
Carly Lythjohan finished with seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and a steal.
UIndy will look to keep the ball rolling Saturday when it travels to face Truman State at 2 p.m. ET.
