Greyhounds' late drought costly in 63-52 loss at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The UIndy women's basketball team hit a late scoring drought down the stretch of a 63-52 loss at Truman State Saturday afternoon.

After using a 9-2 run to pull within 44-43 with 10:44 remaining, the Greyhounds hit just one field goal the rest of the way, dropping them to 10-13 overall and 7-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Bulldogs (14-9, 8-7 GLVC) jumped out to a quick nine-point lead at 13-4, helped in part due to a slow shooting performance early for the Greyhounds.

UIndy rebounded, however, using a 16-4 run to come all the way back and take a brief 18-17 lead. The two squads traded baskets the remainder of the first period, and TSU went into the break up 28-27.

After the 2-for-8 start the Greyhounds went 9-for-14 to close the half, and were led by Nicole Anderson's 10 points. Allie Norton, who entered the game second in the GLVC with 2.9 three-pointers per game, sank three triples and had 11 points in the opening half to lead the home team.

In the second half the Bulldogs used a 9-0 run to open a 42-34 lead with 12:37 left, forcing UIndy Head Coach Constantin Popa to call a timeout.

The message in the huddle seemed to work, as the Hounds ripped off the 9-2 spurt that brought them within one point of Truman. After the run, a lone layup from Princess German marked the only made field goal for UIndy.

Despite the drought, the Greyhounds were right in the game through the final horn due to their efficiency from the charity stripe (7-for-7 to finish the game). But the Bulldogs also sank enough freebies to help put away UIndy, hitting 8 of 10 in the final minutes.

Anderson led the Hounds with 18 points, pulling in six rebounds and dishing three assists. Princess German followed with 15 points, adding an assist and a steal. Carly Lythjohan recorded six rebounds, five points, four steals and a block.

After shooting 50 percent in the first half the Hounds went just 8-for-30 (26 percent) in the second, including 2-for-13 from three-point range.

UIndy now sits 10th overall in the GLVC standings, but has clinched a berth in the conference tournament and is only one game back from five 8-7 squads.

The Greyhounds have three games remaining on the regular season schedule, starting next week with a pair of road games at Southern Indiana (Feb. 19) and Bellarmine (Feb. 21).
