Screaming Eagles overwhelm Greyhounds in 68-49 loss

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A season-high 25 turnovers and a heavy dose of Anna Hackert doomed the UIndy women's basketball team in a 68-49 loss at Southern Indiana Thursday night.

The Screaming Eagles (21-5, 13-3 GLVC) converted those turnovers into 22 points, but also received a huge lift from Hackert's 35 points and 16 rebounds. The GLVC Player of the Year candidate fell one point shy of her career high, and finished 12-for-17 from the floor and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

UIndy (10-14, 7-9) used the long ball early on to put the Screaming Eagles on the ropes, knocking down five of the first six attempts and racing out to a 17-13 lead.

The hot shooting quickly vanished, however, as UIndy managed just four points over the final 14 minutes. Over that span the home squad regained the lead and took a narrow 23-21 lead into the halftime break.

Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, as UIndy went 0-for-5 from three-point land to close the frame, finishing 8-for-23 (35 percent) overall. Southern Indiana went just 9-for-29 (31 percent) from the floor, including 1-for-7 from long range, finishing with its second-lowest first-half point total of the season.

Each squad also struggled to maintain possession; UIndy finishing with 15 turnovers and USI with 10 in the first 20 minutes.

But the Screaming Eagles cleaned up their play in the second half, limiting turnovers and relying Hackert to help bolster their second half offensive effort.

USI scored nine of the first 12 points in the half, taking a 32-24 lead. The Hounds responded by draining more three-pointers, and back-to-back triples from Carly Lythjohan and Nicole Anderson made it 42-41 halfway through the period.

From there, a lengthy 15-4 USI run all but put the game out of UIndy's reach. The Screaming Eagles outscored the Greyhounds 26-8 over the final 10 minutes, closely resembling a 24-9 run that buried the Hounds in the two squads' previous meeting earlier this season.

UIndy finished 17-47 (36 percent) from the field, and 10-27 (37 percent) from long range. Entering the game averaging over 15 made free throws per game, the Hounds managed just six attempts all night against USI.

"We couldn't find ways to do a whole lot tonight offensively, unfortunately," Head Coach Constantin Popa told WICR following the game. "We just couldn't find any rhythm."

Senior Kelly Walter led the team with 17 points on four 3-pointers, adding four rebounds and two assists. Junior Princess German tallied 13 points, five boards and an assist, and Anderson recorded 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Lythjohan had six points, five rebounds, three assists and a steal.

USI held a 32-14 advantage in points in the paint, and scored 22 second-chance points on 12 offensive rebounds.

With GLVC Tournament seeding still up in the air, UIndy has an important game at Bellarmine Saturday night. Tip-off against the Knights is scheduled for 5:30.
