Greyhounds drop stunning double-overtime contest at Bellarmine, 80-77

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After seeing their 16-point second-half lead vanish, the Greyhounds fell 80-77 in double overtime at Bellarmine Saturday night in Knights Hall.

The Knights (14-11, 9-8 GLVC) trailed 51-35 with less than 10 minutes left in regulation, but clawed all the way back using a 28-12 run to tie the game at 63 apiece, forcing an extra session. Freshman Sarah Costello hit a clutch three-pointer with 45 second left, but BU's Destony Curry matched on the other end with a triple of her own.

UIndy (10-15, 7-10) later found itself down 72-70 with only eight seconds left in the first overtime. Coming out of a timeout, sophomore Nicole Anderson converted a game-tying bucket to force another five minutes of action.

Finally, in the second overtime, the Knights were able to outlast the Hounds. Her team down 78-77 with less than 30 seconds remaining, Jen Smith banked in a jumper to put Bellarmine ahead for good while netting a career-high 17 points.

The Greyhounds had three individuals record double-doubles, led by Anderson's prolific 31 point, 13 rebound effort. The sophomore from Terre Haute. Ind., set career highs in both, and added six assists and two blocks to her stellar outing.

Senior Carly Lythjohan finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and two assists, good for her first career double-double. She sank eight of her 11 points in the overtime periods. Before her foul-out, Costello contributed 12 points, 10 assists, four steals and three boards for her first double-double.

"Our girls played really hard, you know, but we're a little bit outnumbered at this point," Head Coach Constantin Popa told WICR after the game. "We made some young mistakes and paid the price in the end, but we fought through two overtimes and just couldn't catch a break."

UIndy had to play much of the extra time without starters Costello and Ashley Montanez - both of whom fouled out - and were already shorthanded without the team's leading scorer, Princess German, out for the game.

Montanez finished with seven rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists; while sophomore Victoria Schaefer had three points and three boards in 14 minutes. Freshman Emily Thomas – playing in her first collegiate game – went a perfect 3-for-3 for six points in seven minutes.

Senior Kelly Walter tallied 12 points, six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal playing the entire 50 minutes.

UIndy wraps up the regular season Thursday against Saint Joseph's for Senior Night. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. ET.

Notes: The newly-added replay system was utilized in two crucial moments, although the two calls in question were both upheld. The first came at the end of regulation, when Costello picked up her fifth foul with 0:03 left on the clock. The officials checked to see if the foul warranted a flagrant, which would have resulted in Bellarmine free throws (the Knights were 8-for-8 from the line at that point). Instead, the call was a regular personal foul – just UIndy's sixth of the half – resulting in the Knights' possession. The second came in the final OT, with 34 seconds left and UIndy leading 77-76. Bellarmine was awarded the ball on an out-of bounds call, and it was confirmed via replay. The Knights went on to hit the game-winner on the ensuing possession.
