DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The 2015 season started on a high note for the UIndy baseball squad in a 12-3 victory at North Georgia Friday afternoon.
The Greyhound bats took no time to warm up coming out of the offseason, as UIndy (1-0) hung six runs on the Nighthawks (2-4) in the first two frames.
Sean McCracken put the Hounds on the board with a two-run dinger in the top of the first inning.
Back-to-back RBI singles from
Anthony Asalon and
Alex Ritchie in the next inning doubled UIndy's lead, and newcomer
Colin Hawk followed with a two-run blast of his own that chased UNG starter Brandon Agar. The Hounds led 6-0 heading to the bottom of the second inning.
UIndy put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits. After
Zach Jacobs made it 8-2 with a RBI single,
Luke Andrade smoked a three-run homer on a full count, making it 11-2.
The Hounds' opening day starter
Matthew Kaplanis was nearly spotless in his first outing of the season, tossing six complete innings, allowing three runs on four hits. He finished with seven strikeouts to just one walk.
Dylan Stutsman and
JT Terwilliger came in to throw three innings of scoreless relief to seal the win.
Andrade had a monster day at the dish, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs; while
Daniel Lee went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs. Hawk, playing in his first game as a Greyhound after transferring from Cincinnati, went 2-for-4 at the plate in his debut, totaling two RBIs and a run scored.
UIndy racked up its 12 runs on 13 hits, and every starter either recorded a hit or run.
The two squads will meet for a doubleheader tomorrow to wrap up the three-game series. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. ET.
