DAHLONEGA, Ga. – After erupting for 12 runs on 13 hits in yesterday's season opener the Greyhounds' offense stalled in a pair of losses at North Georgia Saturday.
UIndy (1-2) recorded nine hits and one run combined, falling 2-1 and 6-0 to drop the series to the Nighthawks (4-4).
GAME ONE: UNG 2, UIndy 1In Saturday's opener the Greyhound offense was stifled by North Georgia starter Jacob Beauchamp (2-0). The senior southpaw struck out 11 Hounds in 8.2 innings. Â
UIndy made a late-game push in the ninth, tagging Beauchamp for a run to cut the Nighthawks' lead to 2-1.
Daniel Lee hit a solo homer to bring the Hounds within 2-1, and
David Gunst followed with a single to left field. With two outs and a runner on first, pinch-hitter
Blake Richardson faced UNG reliever Phillip Taylor in his first at-bat as a Greyhound.
Richardson drew a five-pitch walk, but with two on and two outs Taylor got
Alex Ritchie to ground out to end the game.
Prior to the ninth-inning blast from Lee, the Hounds' only true scoring threat came in the top of the second inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Beauchamp struck out Ritchie to end the inning, and didn't allow another base runner to get to third base until the ninth.
His counterpart, UIndy sophomore
Connor Mailloux (0-1), was just as effective on the bump. Mailloux tossed eight complete innings, surrendering only five hits and two runs to the Nighthawks. He tallied five strikeouts and faced five batters above the minimum.
After five scoreless innings, North Georgia broke the scoring seal on a RBI single from Connor Hoover, and added another the following frame on a sacrifice fly from Trevor Sams.
Ritchie, Lee, Gunst and
Luke Andrade each recorded a hit, but the rest of the squad went 0-for-17 against Beauchamp.
GAME TWO: UNG 6, UIndy 0The Greyhound bats were held in check again in the rubber match, as they managed just five hits scattered across nine innings in a 6-0 loss.
UIndy starter
Adam Cornwell didn't allow a hit for three innings, but in the fourth the Nighthawks tagged him for four hits and three runs before he was replaced by UIndy freshman
Pete Allen. UNG added another run on a sacrifice fly, and went into the fifth inning leading 4-0.
UIndy had a chance to cut into the lead the next inning, but both Lee and Andrade were thrown out at the plate from the outfield, keeping the Hounds off the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the sixth, UNG tacked on a run on Sam Tidaback's solo homerun, and added another on Hoover's RBI singles that brought in Sams.
Â
Colin Hawk went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks in the loss, and
Brady Thomas went 1-for-3, but as a team UIndy stranded eight runners.Â
Â
The Greyhounds will host Notre Dame College next weekend for a three-game tilt, with the 2015 home opener scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday in Greyhound Park.
