Greyhounds swept in doubleheader at Trevecca Nazarene

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UIndy baseball team dropped consecutive 5-4 decisions at Trevecca Nazarene Saturday night in Nashville, Tenn.

The Hounds (1-4) met the Trojans (5-6) for a doubleheader scheduled to go seven innings apiece, after the teams were originally supposed to meet in Evansville, Ind.

GAME ONE: TNU 5, UIndy 4 (9 inn.)

The home squad took the opener 5-4 on a walk-off RBI double from Hunt Newman in the bottom of the ninth. Newman hit the two-bagger to left center off of UIndy's Brett Collins (0-1), scoring Tyler Burns from first base to seal the victory.

The Greyhounds struck first in the opener. After three scoreless innings, UIndy plated a run on an RBI double from Sean McCracken that scored Brady Thomas.

TNU drew even in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff homer from Hunt Newman off of UIndy starter Matthew Kaplanis.

The Crimson and Grey wasted little time regaining the lead, bring three around to score in the top of the fifth inning. Storm Joop began with a single into left, and moved up to second on David Gunst's sacrifice bunt. After Alex Ritchie walked, Colin Hawk drove in Joop with a double into left center. Thomas brought in both Ritchie and Hawk with a double down the right field line, making it 4-1.

The Trojans answered in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on two hits to tie the game at 4-4.

The Hounds' bats cooled off considerably after the three-run fifth inning. UIndy had just one hit and eight strikeouts in the final four frames. Hawk, Thomas and McCracken each had multiple hits for the Greyhounds in the loss.

Kaplanis threw five innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs while recording six strikeouts.

GAME TWO: TNU 5, UIndy 4 (7 inn.)

TNU again won 5-4 in walk-off fashion to close the doubleheader, this one on a sacrifice fly from the Trojans' Zach Tompkins.

UIndy scored a pair of runs in the top of the second off of RBI singles from Trevor Forde and Hawk, taking an early lead over the hosts.

Trevecca responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, both coming off of UIndy starter Connor Mailloux.

Daniel Lee and Ritchie later contributed RBI doubles to the Hounds' cause, but with the score tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh the Trojans were able to tag UIndy freshman Pete Allen (0-1) for the decisive run.

Allen tossed four innings in relief, allowing just the one earned run and four hits.

Storm Joop and Lee each recorded multiple hits for the Hounds, and Ritchie, Hawk, Lee and Forde drove in a run.

UIndy will return to action Monday to face Quincy for a single nine-inning contest on Trevecca Nazarene's campus.
