HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The 21st-ranked UIndy softball team (2-2) faced off against a pair of top-15 opponents on day two of the annual Charger Chillout Saturday. The Greyhounds took down No. 12 Alabama-Huntsville before falling 5-3 in eight inning to ninth-ranked North Georgia.
Â
GAME 1An RBI single from sophomore
Natalie Lalich broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning, lifting the Hounds to the win. Lalich's two-out game winner plated senior
Casey Williamson, who singled and stole second earlier in the frame.
Â
Junior
Morgan Foley got the complete-game win in the circle, fanning eight batters and allowing zero earned runs. The Charger's two tallies came in the top of the sixth when a Greyhound fielding error set up a two-out, two-run single from UAH sophomore Emily Glover.
Â
UIndy's first two runs came on a blast from DP
Taylor Russell. After junior
Erika Goodwin led off the game with a single up the middle, the Greyhound clean-up hitter deposited the ball over the left field fence to give the Hounds the early lead.
Â
Goodwin added a third-inning double to finish as the only Greyhound with multiple hits.
Â
GAME 2The No. 9 Nighthawks needed extra innings to defeat the Hounds. Tied 3-3 after seven innings, UNG managed two runs in the top of the eighth – one on a double and one on a sac fly.
Â
Following a solid 5 2/3 innings from starter
Coryn Tirpak, Foley (2-1) came in to retire the first five batters she faced before surrendering the extra-inning runs and taking the loss.
Â
UIndy fell behind 2-0 in the second but answered with a three-run third inning to take the lead. Both Goodwin and Williamson homer in the frame, with Williamson's good for her second extra-base hit of the game.
Â
UGA managed an unearned run in the fifth to tie it up and set up the eventual extra-inning win.
Â
The Hounds' stay in Alabama concludes tomorrow with two more games at the Charger Chillout. Both contests feature in-region foes, starting with a match-up against Ferris State at 10 a.m. Live stats will be available here:
