HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – For the third consecutive day, the 21st-ranked UIndy softball team (3-3) earned a split at the annual Charger Chillout. The Greyhounds went 1-1 versus in-region opponents Sunday, topping Ferris State, 9-7, before dropping a 4-2 final to No. 5 Wayne State.
Â
GAME 1After racking up nine runs in the game's first five innings, UIndy survived a late rally from Ferris State to notch its second region win of the Chillout. Down 9-2 heading into the seventh, the Bulldogs plated five runs against the Greyhound bullpen before starter
Morgan Foley returned to the circle to strikeout the potential go-ahead run for the final out of the ball game. Foley finished with a line of 4 1/3 innings pitched, two runs (one earned), three hits and eight strikeouts to earn the win.
Â
Meanwhile, the UIndy bats generated a season-high 11 hits, including six that went for extra bases. Freshman
Jessie Noone had two doubles in the game, while senior
Casey Williamson had a two-run triple.
Â
Eight- and nine-hole hitters
Tayler Weck and
Katie Kelly combined to go 4-for-5 with four runs scored.
Â
GAME 2In a rematch of last year's regional final, the fifth-ranked Warriors managed a run and three hits from their first four batters, chasing game-two starter
Coryn Tirpak in the top of the first.
Â
Foley returned to stop the early rally, but WSU got to the UIndy ace in the fourth when four singles and an error conspired to produce three more runs.
Â
In between, the Hounds scored two tallies in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.Â
Taylor Russell,
Natalie Lalich,
Jenny Thompson and Kelly all singled in the frame, with Thompson and Kelly's hits good for RBIs.
Â
Later, UIndy put two on base in the sixth to threaten the Warrior lead, but the threat ended before a run could cross, ensuring a 4-2 win for the defeating Midwest champs.
Â
The Hounds have an important tournament ahead as four more region opponents await them at the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover. The event, which will be held in Evansvile, Ind., Feb. 28-Mar. 1, kicks off with a battle versus Trevecca Nazarene.
