Softball splits on day one of NTC Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla.- On day one of its Spring Break trip to the National Training Complex Spring Games, the #23 UIndy softball team split a pair of contests, opening the day with an 8-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire before taking a 9-1 region win over Saginaw Valley State.

GAME 1
UIndy couldn't muster much offense in its opening game of the week in Florida, with just three hits in its 8-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire. Casey Williamson, Taylor Russell and Jenny Thompson provided all of the Greyhound offense, with Russell's double in the second inning providing the lone extra-base hit.

Coryn Tirpak took the loss in the circle for UIndy, falling to 0-2 on the season with the setback.

GAME 2
The Greyhounds got their bats going with a pair of runs in the first inning, and scored at least one run in each of the game's five innings en route to a 9-1 region win.

Sydney Russell kickstarted the offense with a one-out single in the bottom of first. She moved to second on a passed ball, and was brought home a batter later by her sister Taylor's RBI single. Natalie Lalich then doubled home Taylor Russel to push the UIndy lead to 2-0.

SVSU notched its lone run, unearned, in the top of the second, with the Greyhounds pushing the score to 3-1 on an Erika Goodwin RBI single to plate Jessie Noone.

A Lalich two-run homer in the third ran the score to 5-1, scoring Taylor Russell. The fourth brought three more runs from the Greyhounds, started by a Goodwin one-out single. Williamson plated Goodwin with an RBI single, and was brought home by a Taylor Russell homer to put UIndy up 8-1. A final Greyhound run in the bottom of the fifth, in the form of Noone scoring on a wild pitch after a single up the middle, closed out the 9-1 UIndy win.

Foley (4-2) fired the two-hit shutout for the win, striking out 12 and walking two.

The No. 23 Greyhounds play another pair in Florida tomorrow, facing off with GLIAC-foe Grand Valley State at 1:00 p.m. and Georgian Court at 3:00 p.m.
