CLERMONT, Fla.- UIndy softball took a pair of wins on day two of the National Training Complex Spring Games, defeating Grand Valley State and Notre Dame College
.GAME 1UIndy jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first versus Grand Valley State and never looked back in an 8-2 victory over the GLIAC-foe Lakers.
Both
Erika Goodwin and
Sydney Russell scored in the first, with both runs unearned.
Jessie Noone came home in the second for the third UIndy run, via an RBI ground out to short from Goodwin.
Jenny Thompson provided the 4-0 UIndy lead, singling through the left side to score Williamson.
The Lakes pushed across a single run in the fourth, but the Greyhounds answered in the fifth with a pair of runs to take the 6-1 advantage. Williamson came home on a
Taylor Russell triple down the rightfield line, and a
Natalie Lalich single to right brought home Russell.
After GVSU plated another solo run in its half of the sixth, the Greyhounds iced the victory with another pair in the seventh, courtesy of a Lalich two run homer to score Williamson.
Morgan Foley (4-2) fired the win from the circle, striking out nine while surrendering six hits.
UIndy continues its stint in Florida with another double dip Sunday. The Greyhounds will face off with California (Pa.) at 1:00 p.m. and close out the day with another in-region Northwood at 3:00 p.m.
GAME 2The #23 Greyhounds (6-4) opened their second day in the Florida sunshine with a 3-2 win over in-region Notre Dame College. UIndy broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, with
Casey Williamson sending a ball over the centerfield wall to score both
Sydney Russell and herself and put the Hounds up 2-0.
Russell would score again in the fifth for the third UIndy run, with a single to left from her sister
Taylor Russell pushing her home. The Falcons scored their two runs in the top of the seventh, on a two-run homer from Kelsey Coleman, but it was too little too late.
Samantha Hogan earned the win for UIndy, surrendering three hits in four and one-third innings of work.
