Hounds earn split on final day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 18 UIndy softball team (11-5) split a pair of games on its final day at the NTC Spring Games, held in Clermont, Fla.  The Greyhounds defeated Lock Haven, 2-1, before falling, 3-0, to Bloomsburg Wednesday.  The Hounds bookended two losses with an eight-game winning streak to finish with an 8-2 mark in the Sunshine State.

GAME 1
Freshman pitcher Sam Hogan got her third win in as many appearances, holding the Lady Eagles (2-8) to just one run over four innings.  The Palatine, Ill., product allowed three hits and zero walks while striking out two.

Hogan actually left the circle trailing 1-0, but the Greyhound offense rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth to ensure Hogan the victory.  Junior Jenny Thompson opened the frame with a solo shot the center field to tie it up.  Two outs followed until sophomore Katie Kelly reached on an infield single, stole second base and scored the go-ahead run on an Erika Goodwin base hit.

Now with a one-run advantage, head coach Missy Frost went to her ace, Morgan Foley.  The reigning GLVC Pitcher of the Week baffled the Lock Haven bats over the final three innings, compiling seven Ks and retiring every batter she faced on the way to earning a save.

UIndy is now 3-0 in one-run games on the year.

GAME 2
UIndy managed just two singles and two walks against Bloomsburg starter Taylor Parker (2-1).  The Hounds' best chance came in the third with two on and one out; Kelly started the frame with a leadoff single and promptly stole second.  After Goodwin bunted her over to third, Sydney Russell worked a walk and also stole second, but Parker retired the next two batters to escape without any damage.

The silver lining in the Hounds' second shutout loss of the year came in the fifth inning when Foley (8-3) recorded her 800th career strikeout, bcoming the first-ever Greyhound to reach to lofty milestone.  She recently passed former teammate Jennifer DeMotte as the school's all-time leader in Ks and is currently second among all active Division II pitchers in career strikeouts.

The Hounds return to the Circle City for their conference opener Saturday versus Drury.  Stay tuned to UIndyAthletics.com for any changes to time and venue.
