TIFFIN, Ohio – UIndy and Tiffin combined for 17 runs and 26 hits Wednesday, but the Dragons prevailed 9-8 in the regional midweek affair in Tiffin, Ohio.
The Greyhounds (4-8) scored all eight runs in the first six innings, but were blanked by the Dragons' Wyatt Myers over the last third of the game. Tiffin (5-9) - members of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference - totaled 15 hits to the Hounds' 11.
UIndy struck first, getting a RBI single from
Anthony Asalon in the top of the second, but the Dragons quickly took control by plating five runs on six hits while forcing the Greyhounds to go to the bullpen early.
Tiffin's lead didn't last long, as the Greyhounds erased the four-run deficit in the top of the fourth. After loading the bases with two outs,
Brady Thomas hit a clutch double that cleared the bags and brought UIndy within 5-4. Thomas scored on the next at-bat - a RBI single from
Sean McCracken that tied the game.
The Hounds regained the lead the following inning.
Colin Hawk continued his recent tear with a two-out, two-run triple that scored Asalon and
Luke Andrade, making it 7-5 in favor of UIndy.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the fifth when the hosts tagged
Pete Allen for two runs on a triple that followed a hit by pitch and walk.
UIndy and Tiffin again swapped runs in the sixth; the Hounds scoring an unearned run off a Dragon fielding error. Tiffin scored once in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-8, but stranded three runners with a chance to grab the lead.
After a scoreless seventh, Tiffin crossed once again in the eighth. Despite giving up the go-ahead run, UIndy got out of a bigger jam when
Brett Collins got Nick Raifsnider to hit into a 6-4-3 double play with the bases full.
Myers was able to close out the game in the top of the ninth to seal the victory. After the first two Dragon pitchers combined to allow eight runs in 5.2 innings, Myers tossed 3.1 innings of no-hit ball to stifle the Hounds' bats.
UIndy scored all eight runs with two outs, and got multi-hit games from Hawk, Thomas, McCracken and
Zach Jacobs. Jacobs upped his hit streak up to eight games, and Hawk and McCracken each ran theirs to five.
The Hounds get another crack at Tiffin in one week, hosting the Dragons for a doubleheader next Wednesday, but first welcome Missouri S&T to Greyhound Park for a four-game tilt this weekend. First pitch Saturday is set for 12 p.m. ET.
