UIndy baseball sweeps Missouri S&T in home-opening doubleheader

INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy swept visiting Missouri S&T Saturday at Greyhound Park, winning the opener 10-6 before taking the second game 1-0.

GAME ONE: UIndy 10, Missouri S&T 6
The meat of UIndy's order powered the Greyhounds (6-8, 4-2 GLVC) past the Miners (7-9, 3-3) in Saturday's opener. Three-hole hitter Brady Thomas contributed three RBIs on a 3-for-5 day at the dish, and cleanup batter Sean McCracken launched a pair of home runs while driving in five runs in the 10-6 victory.

The Miners struck first, however, scoring an unearned run in the top of the third inning to break a scoreless game.

UIndy answered by hanging four runs on the Miners in the bottom of the frame, all four coming with two outs. Colin Hawk started the rally with a walk, and Alex Ritchie followed with a well-executed bunt single to keep the inning alive. Thomas then delivered a RBI single to right field prior to the big hit of the inning – a three-run, opposite field homer from McCracken that made it 4-1.

Missouri S&T brought in three runs in the top of the fifth on four hits and one UIndy error, tying the game again at 4-4.

UIndy reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth, Thomas again delivering a two-out RBI single that gave the Hounds a 5-4 lead.

The Greyhounds added to that lead in the sixth, scoring twice on a pair of hits and one Miner fielding error. Luke Andrade smoked a double deep to right center field, bringing in Zach Jacobs, and Anthony Asalon later helped Andrade score by reaching on an error.

Up 7-4, UIndy stretched its lead again in the bottom of the seventh. After Hawk led off with a double to left, Thomas brought him home with his third RBI single of the game. After the Miners went to the bullpen, McCracken followed with his second dinger of the afternoon to make it 10-4.

The Miners threatened in the top of the ninth, scoring twice on UIndy reliever Josh Witt, but the senior righty avoided too much damage and sealed the 10-6 win for the Greyhounds.

UIndy starter Matthew Kaplanis (3-0) picked up the winning decision, tossing 5.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits. Witt threw 3.1 innings, earning his first save of the season.

GAME TWO: UIndy 1, Missouri S&T 0
After using the sticks to take the first game, the Greyhounds utilized solid pitching and timely defensive stops to narrowly win the second, 1-0.

UIndy starter Jordan Tackett (1-2) tossed 5.2 innings, giving up just one hit – an infield dribbler that Tyler Johnson beat out by a step.

Tackett finished with four strikeouts to two walks, but was pulled in the top of the sixth when S&T put two runners on with two outs. Greyhound reliever Brett Collins came on and surrendered an infield single that loaded the bases. Nick Ulrich then stepped to the plate and smoked a line drive into left field, but a running Thomas made a diving catch to record the third out and save at least the game-tying run.

UIndy needed a bit more defense to secure the win. In the top of the seventh, the Miners got a runner into scoring position on a single followed by a sacrifice bunt. Collins first fanned an S&T batter for the second out, then Hawk ended the game by making a play on a tough grounder to shortstop.

Hawk delivered the game's lone run, as well, plating Daniel Lee on a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the third.

Collins picked up his third save of the season, and improved his team-best ERA to 1.80. Tackett's start was his best of the season, and was his first going at least five complete innings this year. The two held S&T to just 3-for-24 (.125) at the dish during the shutout.

McCracken and Lee each recorded doubles, but the Miners' Aaron Bedsworth also kept the Hounds' bats at bay for most of the game. UIndy went 4-for-19 (.210) in the victory.

UIndy and Missouri S&T wrap up the four-game series tomorrow, with a doubleheader slated for 12 p.m. ET at Greyhound Park.
