INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy baseball squad split Sunday's twin bill with visiting Missouri S&T, falling 3-2 before taking the finale 10-3, earning a 3-1 series win over the Miners at Greyhound Park.
GAME ONE: Missouri S&T 3, UIndy 2 (7 inn.)Sunday's opener was a pitcher's duel much like Saturday's finale, as the teams combined for a .217 batting average (10-46) in the Miners' 3-2 victory.
The Miners struck first, scoring one on UIndy starter
Connor Mailloux (0-3) in the top of the first inning. After surrendering back-to-back singles to start the game, the Greyhound righty limited the damage by retiring three of the next four S&T batters to strand two runners.
UIndy took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning. After
Sean McCracken walked and
Zach Jacobs reached on an error,
Trevor Forde moved them up on a sacrifice bunt and
Luke Andrade brought them home with a single to center.
Mailloux pitched three scoreless frames before the Miners scored again in the fifth, plating two runs with two outs on the board. Lance Portwood and Tyler Johnson hit consecutive RBI base knocks that gave the visitors a 3-2 lead and chased the Greyhound starter.
The righty from Windsor, Ontario, finished with 4.2 innings pitched, scattering five hits and three runs.
S&T starter Micah Dohlen (2-2) got into trouble in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. He got out of the one-out jam by inducing a 6-4-3 double play from UIndy's
Colin Hawk.
The Hounds again loaded the bases in the sixth, but Miner reliever Josh Havig got a groundout from Andrade to preserve the lead. Â Tyler Johnson retired UIndy in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn his first save of the season.
Jacobs finished 2-for-2 from the plate, the rest of the Hounds combining to go 2-for-19. Andrade's two RBIs marked his first multi-RBI game since the 12-3 season-opening win at North Georgia (Feb. 13).
GAME TWO: UIndy 10, Missouri S&T 3Missouri S&T again scored first in the series finale, tagging sophomore starter
Adam Cornwell for a run in the second to take a 1-0 edge.
The Greyhounds wasted no time drawing even, however, as
Bryce Aldridge drove in Jacobs for his first collegiate RBI in just his third at-bat of the year.
UIndy took its first lead of the game the following inning. Hawk led off with a walk, and Asalon reached and advanced to second on a throwing error from the third baseman. Back-to-back RBI singles from
Brady Thomas and
Sean McCracken made it 3-1, and McCracken later scored an unearned run to make it 4-1 after three complete.
The Miners scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Cornwell escaped the inning without further runs scored by striking out Adam Richter to strand two runners in scoring position.
S&T again scored in the top of the fifth, cutting the Greyhound lead to 4-3, but UIndy quickly got the run back in the bottom of the frame. McCracken and Jacobs reached on back-to-back singles with one out. On a double steal, the Miner catcher Lucas Swindle threw the ball into left field, allowing McCracken to score and make it 5-3.
The Hounds scored three in the sixth on a wild play that involved a pair of Miner blunders. With runners on first and second, Hawk laid down a bunt toward third. John Ceriotti then tried to get the lead runner at third, but threw the ball into left field, allowing a run to score. The left fielder, Trevor Karbowski, failed to field the ball cleanly, and by the time he got the ball in Hawk had circled the bases to bring the lead up to 8-3.
In the seventh, Ritchie and Hawk each drove in runs to increase the Hounds' lead to 10-3.
McCracken was 3-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored; and Jacobs went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Cornwell (2-1) went five-plus innings, allowing just four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four.
Brett Collins tossed three innings, allowing only two hits while one above the minimum.
UIndy will welcome Tiffin for a regional doubleheader Wednesday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. ET at Greyhound Park.
