INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy dramatically swept visiting GLIAC-member Tiffin 7-2 and 6-5 (10 innings) at Greyhound Park Wednesday, picking up important regional victories.
GAME ONE: UIndy 7, Tiffin 2 (7 inn.)The Greyhounds (9-9) exacted some measure of revenge in Wednesday's opener. When the two squads met last week Tiffin reliever Wyatt Myers stumped the Hounds over the final third of the game, allowing Tiffin to prevail 9-8 in the nine-inning affair.
This time around Myers got the ball to start the game, but UIndy hung five runs on him and chased him in just three innings.
The Dragons scored first, however, plating a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, and adding another on UIndy starter
Jake Sprinkle (2-0) in the top of the third to make it 2-0.
UIndy responded with a game-changing two out rally in the third to take the lead. With a pair of outs on the board,
Anthony Asalon, facing a 1-2 count, sparked a streak of six consecutive hits that brought five Greyhounds around to score.
Sean McCracken,
Zach Jacobs,
Luke Andrade and
Blake Richardson drove in RBIs during the tear, helping UIndy take a 5-2 advantage.
Richardson later hit a sharp liner into center field to bring home Andrade in the fourth, increasing the Hounds' lead to 6-2.
Brady Thomas drove in another in the sixth on a sacrifice fly that scored
Alex Ritchie, and UIndy went into the final inning with a 7-2 edge.
With the lead in his pocket, Sprinkle put on cruise control and worked quickly through the Dragons' batters for the complete-game win. Making his first collegiate start, the Indianapolis native allowed just one hit and two baserunners across the final four innings, facing only one above the minimum amount of batters possible.
Andrade and Richardson tallied multiple RBIs, and Richardson, Thomas and McCracken each finished with two base knocks.
GAME TWO: UIndy 6, Tiffin 5 (10 inn.)Asalon was the hero in the second game, knocking in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, and also driving in the game-winning run in the 10th.
Trailing 4-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, UIndy was on the brink of splitting the doubleheader and losing the season series to Tiffin.
With three outs of life remaining, the Greyhounds went to work on Tiffin closer Tim Brenner. Andrade and
Bryce Aldridge delivered back-to-back singles, and Richardson made it a one run game by scoring Andrade on a sacrifice fly. Tiffin then made the decision to go to the pen to bring in Tyler Nichols, a regular starter, to try and close it out with Hawk at the plate and the tying run at first. Hawk coaxed a walk, and Asalon came through with his first clutch RBI single to knot the game at 4-4.
UIndy looked poised to end the game quickly in the eighth, loading the bases with just one out. But Nichols came up with two consecutive outs without surrendering a run.
In the top of the ninth, Tiffin's Seth Bryant came up with a huge RBI double deep to center to give the Dragons a 5-4 edge. The two-bagger capped a remarkable 4-for-5 game for Bryant at the dish, and seemed to be the decisive blow to the Hounds' comeback bid.
But the Hounds kept coming.
UIndy loaded the bases again in the ninth, and this time around Andrade unintentionally came up with a clutch RBI by being plunked in the side by Tiffin pitcher Lucas Farley, making it 5-5.
The Greyhounds finally ended it in the 10th frame. Richardson reached with his third base hit of the day, and Ritchie moved him up with a textbook sacrifice bunt. After Hawk drew the intentional walk, Asalon smacked a single into left field that allowed Richardson to plate the winning run.
UIndy only led briefly in the 1st and 10th innings, but never allowed the Dragons to close the door with their backs on the ropes. In innings where Tiffin took what would have been the conclusive lead (7th, 9th and 10th innings) the Hounds went 5-for-9 and drew five walks when at bat.
The game also featured 13 pitchers, with UIndy's
Brett Collins (1-1) picking up the winning decision going four complete innings, allowing three hits and one run.
Richardson and Andrade each finished the day 3-for-5 with three RBI; and McCracken was 4-for-8 with four RBI and one run scored.
UIndy stays home to face Illinois Springfield this weekend for a four-game GLVC series. First pitch Saturday is set for 12 p.m.
